Good police work defuses tense situation

Haverhill police skillfully handled a tense standoff Friday with an armed fugitive. Their fine work prevented any harm coming to residents of the Mount Washington neighborhood.

After the standoff of nearly six hours, Mark D. Matthews, 48, of Spicewood, Texas, walked out of an apartment at 32 Bellevue Ave. and surrendered to a squad of police snipers with their rifles trained on him. Matthews is wanted in Texas on weapons charges and for violating a restraining order.

A fast and overwhelming response by police prevented the incident from getting out of hand.

Police said they first learned Friday night that Matthews was in Haverhill and they moved in Saturday morning after the truck was sighted outside the house. A confrontation started when Matthews spotted Haverhill police Sgt. Dana Burrill looking at his truck. After receiving information that Matthews was not going to surrender and risk going back to jail, the local police called the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council SWAT team for assistance. There were more than 50 police officers at the scene.

2. You're welcom merh. This is what we are talking about.
I would request all Duers to read this and consider the proper way to handle these situations. This man was WITHOUT question more dangerous than many of those who were tased.

3. Combination of personal skill and good training ...
... and it is good to note that no children were tasered in the process.

I DO understand your point: The level of skill and training of each officer is AS important as the equipment they carry.
