Fewer firms being started, study finds

Tribune staff, wire reports
Published June 13, 2005

A new Entrepreneurship Research Institute study shows a sharp decline in U.S. business creation and warns about the growing gap between entrepreneurship here and in Asia.

"The major competitive threat is not Japan or Europe. It's the growing level of activity in Asian countries," said Paul Reynolds, director of the institute at Florida International University.

After a substantial rise in entrepreneurial activity between 1993 to 2000 there has been a decline through 2004, the institute's study indicates.

A significant drop occurred from 2003 to 2004, when 4 million fewer Americans started businesses--a more than 20 percent decrease.

(Another indicator of how badly the economy and entrepreneurship are doing in this country. Tax cuts were supposed to encourage new biz)

1. Fear and terror
are all the U.S. government people ever talk about. We are in a never-ending war which won't end until all oil-producing sectors of the planet are under control and stable.

This does not exactly inspire confidence among investors and entrepreneurs. Why not start a business somewhere in the world which is at peace and furthermore hopes to remain at peace and, unlike the sickos who rule over us, actually believes peace to be a desirable state?

Like just about anywhere in Asia, for instance.

3. India is seeing an explosion of new startups in biotechnology,
software development, modern medical centers catering exclusively to Western and Japanese clientele, new airlines and many more. The capital flow to India is accelerating attracted by the high returns. The availability of a highly educated workforce combined with plentiful blue collar workers in skilled trades is making india a preferred destination.

Your point about a society at peace without the Damocles' sword of perpetual war hanging over it makes countries throughout Asia very attractive. Many Israelis are settling down in India after a few visits attracted by the Budhhist and Hindu religious traditions. That is also due to the new opportunities in technology related work India offers to many Israeli professionals.

2. It takes money to start a new business.
Would-be entrepreneurs are finding it difficult to get their hands on any. Bush and his buddies appear to have it all.

6. That's one of his most lying lines. He often talks about small
businesses doing the hiring...what a joke. There are bigtime cankers in this economy.

5. Any smart potential business person can see that the economy
is going to really tank, with oil prices, job outsourcing, etc., and isn't about to start a business that no one will be able to buy from. The only business I would start now is a local tavern. They never lose money.

8. Well that just says everything you need to know about the Bush economy...
... doesn't it?

Bush is a total and complete, abject failure.

There's just no other way to sum it up. He has completely failed our country, from ignoring pre-9/11 warnings... to letting Osama bin Laden walk away untouched... to presiding over the complete ruination of our economy, now and for years to come.

Worst. President. Ever.
