"ex-felons" politically, in very large numbers. After they've served their sentences, in those states they cannot vote for the rest of their lives, except when Governors grant written exceptions. For this reason, along with ten-to-one racial disparities in incarceration, in those states up to ONE-THIRD of African-American men could not legally vote during the last "election". 7. There actually are 3 groups of Senators: 45 were onboard by mid-Feb,

16 joined as cosponsors last week, and 39 hadn't cosponsored as of last Thursday.

All but six still not on board are Republicans, mainly from the deep South and from Western states with relatively few African-Americans. The shockers: Neither of Ohio's Republican Senators had cosponsored, nor had Chafee, Grassley, Warner, Wyden, or Reed.

Thus the Republicans have passed up a golden opportunity to give "left cover" to their campaign against the filibuster.

The senator said the rancher asked him, "Conrad, how can you live back there with all those niggers?"

Senator Burns said he told the rancher it was "a hell of a challenge."

The anecdote was published and Senator Burns apologized. When he was asked why he hadn't expressed to the rancher any disapproval of the use of the word nigger, Senator Burns said, "I don't know. I never give it much thought."

This SHOULD be a rallying cry for the Dems. The party needs to make hay out of this...rather than enabling it. Every speech Howard Dean gives, he should ask this question. It should be in our avatars. When we send emails, it ought to be part of our signature line.

When Republicans go into black communities this ought to be the first, last and every question in between. Like Dean said about support of the Voting Rights Act, this should also be a litmus test for Black support. What was your position on the anti-lynching legislation? How did YOU vote?
