That's what I think.
For years the religious extremists were too mired in their absolutes to get very far.
Likewise the corporate masters couldn't tip their hand too far or even the more apathetic voters would challenge them.
But somewhere in the last decade or two they struck a compromise over the one resource they could share: US. The corporate interests would get our money - the religious interests get our souls (or think they do).
The corporate interests can exploit our work, and the religious interests can demand we live by their holy book.
And in the interest of both is that we have no illusions that WE own our own bodies. We are here to work, to pray, and to make future workers/worshippers.
And in this unholy bargain these two forces have each compromised but in doing so have gained more than they ever could have without the other.
