Trent Lott should run on a Pro-Lynching platform next election...
Edited on Tue Jun-14-05 02:53 PM by politicaholic
We democrats are soooo sorry that we insinuated Trent Lott was a racist a few years back. I think I remember us being equated to a "PC lynch mob". Obviously Trent liked it.

Yup, there's some strange fruit presiding over Trent's sense of equality. What a fucking jerkoff.

10. I agree.
Mississippi still has issues concerning race, but not that issue. They might still fly the Confederate flag, but that's more about their sense of pride than about hatred (I don't support it, still).

He might get a bit more support than we'd like to see with such a platform, but he wouldn't win. He's won so far by looking distinguished, mannered, and loyal to the state. Not by flagrant and violent racism.

13. You sure?
They elected Haley Barbor a few years ago and didn't he have ties with a white supremacist group?

Wasn't there also a vote to ban interracial marriage (well mostly sybolic because the ban was already unconstitutional) that was very close? Then again, I think that was Alabama.

16. That's a long way from supporting lynching
Haley Barbor didn't call for lynchings when he was elected. I don't know of any bans on interracial marriage in Mississippi in recent times. I may have missed it, since I don't live their anymore, but I think my parents or my many friends who do still live there would have mentioned it. But let's say you're right, there was a recent vote to ban interracial marriage, and it failed by a close margin. It still failed, and that's still a long way away from lynching.

7. I KNEW that bigot would be on that list.
After his defense of Strom Thurmond this is no surprise. He would surely win on that platform...what a bigoted, vile piece of shit he is. :grr:

12. I haven't heard, but I can guess
The two Mississippi Senators didn't co-sponsor the bill because it would be an admission that the south was wrong. Even though most people in Mississippi would now say that lynchings were horrible, they would not want to admit that their elected officials supported lynchings. They were done by outlaws, criminals, and misguided observers who were just following what their neighbors said was acceptable. Therefore, an apology now for what Congress failed to do then is just a backhanded swipe at the South for past crimes--another bullying tactic by the North.

Keep in mind, neither senator voted against it. It was approved unanimously by the Senate. These senators simply refused to co-sponsor it. I'm not defending them--I don't defend them--I'm just explaining. They took a coward's way out--not supporting the bill, but not opposing it either. That way it can't become a campaign issue, either way.
