I know that this is a truism - as obvious as the nose on my face, but there are still times when it hits me and blows my mind.

Growing up, learning about men of honor and integrity - Washington, Lincoln - decency and vision - Franklin Roosevelt, Kennedy - In NEVER in my wildest dreams imagined our country would devolve into THIS.

In college, I learned about US expansionism, genocide of the native Americans and power run amok (McCarthyism, Cointelpro, Iran-Contra), but somehow I thought that the real villainy was exclusive to the distant past or faraway lands without a "tradition of democracy". When the Berlin wall fell, it seemed as though the world was on a new path to freedom, peace and cooperation.
