HOUSE VOTES TO LIMIT PATRIOT ACT
WASHINGTON - The House voted Wednesday to block the FBI and the
Justice Department from using the Patriot Act to search library and book store records.

Despite a veto threat from President Bush,

lawmakers voted 238-187 to block the part of the anti-terrorism law that allows the government to investigate the reading habits of terror suspects.

The vote reversed a narrow loss last year by lawmakers complaining about threats to privacy rights. They narrowed the proposal this year to permit the government to continue to seek out records of Internet use at libraries.

9. It's a SMALL step. The Patriot Act is an illegal piece of legislation.
The only true victory for it's abusive, corrupt presence to be dissolved from any part of our governing bodies.

It is a pox on our country and a shameful chapter that needs to be overturned.

10. True. But Bush is losing his spell on them.
This is the House's second act of defiance, after their stem cell vote. Small steps but important.

13. Is this the Sanders amendment?
I think so, the vote count matches up

Only Rep. Boren strayed from the reservation, the other "186" nays were pukes. I hope Dr. Dean is drawing up the campaign commercials now.

19. Be careful and Bush's useless Veto
Be careful celebrating before we know what they've added to the act. Maybe what they slipped in is more odious than what they took out.

Regarding Bushes veto, he's screwed. These parts of the act expire if a new law isn't passed. If he vetos the bill, it expires. what can he do?

22. Yeah, but there were other nasty pieces in that act....
the whole thing should have been flushed.

It talks about limiting the abuses of our civil liberties, but it is still planning to abuse our civil liberties.

Still, I guess it's a step in the right direction.
