comparing Bush now to Clinton in 96

Some people claim that Clinton's numbers were around the same as Bush's, but they were in fact rising. Is this true?

I do remember alot of optimism by the repugs up until maybe 4-5 months before the election, they thought they had Bill on the ropes. But Dole just sort of flatlined. Anybody remember the specifics? What was his campaign built around? How did he try to attack Clinton when the economy was so good and we were in peacetime.

1. Dole never led the race at all

And by the end of 1995 it was clear that Dole was not going to win. The "Republican Revolution" had fizzled out by then. The Government Shutdowns took their toll and the GOP's numbers never recovered after that point.

2. Such a different time....

I remember Saturday Night Live running comedy sketches with all of the Repugs in the primary arguing over who could get beat worse by Bush.

Bob Dole: "Nominate me, I will get my ass kicked a lot harder than the rest of these idiots."


That was January of 96.

The truth is that Clinton was in trouble (The only other time than the Lewinsky scandal) in 94. By 96 he was unbeatable.

3. That's the new spin...

That Bush's numbers are the same or better than Clinton's or Reagan's at the same point in their administration. Problem with that though is this:

Clinton's numbers had dropped in 1994 (due to endless Whitewater coverage) and were on the rise again by the end of the year. Reagan's numbers had dropped (due to the massive recession in 81-82) and were on the rise again.

Bush's numbers are falling.

4. There is no comparison between Bush now and Clinton in 95

It's two diametrically (spelling) opposed worlds at this point in time. There are no valid comparisons that can be made.

Yes, at this point Bush was ahead of Reagan and Clinton. But Clinton and Reagan were rising while Bush is dropping like a rock on Jupiter. In fact, by the looks of things within about a month or so the numbers will have crossed over and they won't be able to spout this crap anymore.

The trend is your friend, and without a big reversal Bush is going to have a rough road.
