1. Small picture: I'm gonna hit you in the face because I don't like you and I'm an asshole. 2. Bigger picture: I need to stand with my family and defend them against harm, even if I act like an asshole doing it. 3. Bigger picture: Our community is our home, and we must care for it, so let's put the garbage somewhere else over there. 4. Bigger picture: My blue state is better than your red state, because we're just smarter, that's all. 5. Bigger picture: America is an example of a good and free society, and we want to help other nations attain this freedom to build a safer world. 6. THE BIG PICTURE: As the most powerful nation, it's our responsibility to look deep within our own flawed history and policies, and lead the world not by force but by example and by risking our own self-image.
Bush, claiming to have the "big picture," is operating at #5 on his best day (and much of the time flopping around at 1, 2, and 3); however, our leaders need to understand that #6 is the biggest picture, and that's from where they must lead.
