3. It's a reference

to an old Star Trek episode. Unfortunately, I just googled it and realized that the quote should be "There are four lights". Oops, so much for going on old memories.

Anyway, this is the episode where Captain Picard gets captured and is being tortured. The bad guy want Picard to say there are five lights when there are clearly only four. He lets him know the torture will not stop until he admits that there are five lights. At the end, Picard gets rescued and he stumbles out of his cell still insisting, "There are four lights".

Yes, more or less - Winston Smith say something like 'freedom is the right to say two and two is four'. When torturing him, O'Brien holds up four fingers and says "how many fingers?" and then "and if I say there are five?" He tortures Smith (including Smith saying "there are five", but O'Brien says "you don't really believe that, do you?" and tortures him a bit more - Orwell knew that people would say anything to get out of torture, even if Rumsfeld doesn't), until Smith is so broken that he really can't tell.
