U.S. Daily Casualties 9/23/2003

As of Monday, 302 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq, according to the Department of Defense.

The U.S. Central Command on Sunday had reported a total of 304 deaths. There was no immediate explanation of the discrepancy. The British military has reported 49 deaths. Denmark's military has reported one death.

On or since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 164 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq, according to the latest Defense Department figures.

Since the start of military operations, 1,296 U.S. service members have been wounded as a result of hostile action, according to U.S. Central Command. Nonhostile injured numbered 320. No new deaths were reported by U.S. Central Command.

The latest identification reported by the military:


Army Sgt. Anthony O. Thompson, 26, Orangeburg, S.C.; killed Sept. 18 in Tikrit, Iraq, in a small arms fire and rocket propelled grenade ambush; assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.

Army Spc. Richard Arriaga, 20, Ganado, Texas; killed Sept. 18 in Tikrit, Iraq, in a small arms fire and rocket propelled grenade ambush; assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.

Army Staff Sgt. Frederick L. Miller, Jr., 27, Hagerstown, Ind.; killed Sept. 20 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, by an improvised explosive device; assigned to Troop K, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colo.
