As the media and the American Idle public wake from the stupor of TV culture...the GOP is in a tricky spot. Mid Term elections are coming up fast and the public is quickly realizing what we here at DU have known all along...Bush and Cheney manipulated intelligence and the media to build support for a war in Iraq.
From "yellow-cake" to mushroom clouds, remote control planes with bio-weapons, mobile bio-weapon labs, tubes for a non-existent centrifuge and a host of other trumped up claims, the Bush administration met the public head on week after week calling for war. The threat was ominous and real, Saddam was responsible for 911. The public was completely sucked in by the relentless onslaught of war, war, war. Colin Powell broke the publics back with high tech imagery and a doomsday predicting presentation before the U.N.
Then comes the Downing Street Memo....a clear, plain worded document that encapsulates the attitude of the administration. War at all costs.
So now the GOP has some explaining to do to their constituents. Why have so many died? For what reason. WMD's? None were found. Hussein a threat? Not really. Hussein an oppressive dictator? Yeah well was but it seems that with out oppression the Iraq would be in chaos. Much like it is now.
Americans have grown weary of daily bombings. Photos of shredded Iraqi children. Pictures of middle aged combat casualties with high school age children. Pictures of young beautiful people who's lives were ended abruptly because of a political vanity war.
The GOP can continue to support the lies, ignore the truth but in doing so run the risk of ultimate political collapse and sweeping changes will be wrought upon congress by the American people as they realize to wage war upon another nation for a just cause is one thing but to lie and deceive a nation to do so is another matter.
The GOP middle will not stand idle at being lied to. There is never a justification to lie to the public in when war is at stake.
Bush played the American public and the media fast and loose. The GOP followed along thinking they would be right in the end. Arrogance has caught up to them now. The more they deny, the more crow they chew and the angrier the American people become.
It is clear the path to be taken by the GOP. Impeach or loose all credibility and loose your comfy Washington job.
Stop living the neocon dream of freedom and glory, it is in reality only misery and death for thousands upon thousands and unemployment for truth blind Republicans.
As one DU'er pointed out...a quote from the McCarthy era...
"Have you no sense of decency...?"
With 96% of the American public not believing that the Bush administration manipulated the justifications for war and Bush's approval ratings in a free-fall we will see the rats flee the ship. They will do so with typical Washington style, by shifty blame, never admitting error, obeying the rule of law and seeking to heal the wounds of a Presidency that has stained the integrity of the American democracy.
