Dear Sirs:

I write to express my profound disappointment with Dana Milbank's June 17 report, "Democrats Play House to Rally Against the War," which purports to describe a Democratic hearing I chaired in the Capitol yesterday. In sum, the piece cherry-picks some facts, manufactures others out of whole cloth, and does a disservice to some 30 members of Congress who persevered under difficult circumstances, not of our own making, to examine a very serious subject: whether the American people were deliberately misled in the lead up to war. The fact that this was the Post's only coverage of this event makes the journalistic shortcomings in this piece even more egregious.

In an inaccurate piece of reporting that typifies the article, Milbank implies that one of the obstacles the Members in the meeting have is that "only one" member has mentioned the Downing Street Minutes on the floor of either the House or Senate. This is not only incorrect but misleading. In fact, just yesterday, the Senate Democratic Leader, Harry Reid, mentioned it on the Senate floor. Senator Boxer talked at some length about it at the recent confirmation hearing for the Ambassador to Iraq. The House Democratic Leader, Nancy Pelosi, recently signed on to my letter, along with 121 other Democrats asking for answers about the memo. This information is not difficult to find either. For example, the Reid speech was the subject of an AP wire service report posted on the Washington Post website with the headline "Democrats Cite Downing Street Memo in Bolton Fight". Other similar mistakes, mischaracterizations and cheap shots are littered throughout the article.

The article begins with an especially mean and nasty tone, claiming that House Democrats "pretended" a small conference was the Judiciary Committee hearing room and deriding the decor of the room. Milbank fails to share with his readers one essential fact: the reason the hearing was held in that room, an important piece of context. Despite the fact that a number of other suitable rooms were available in the Capitol and House office buildings, Republicans declined my request for each and every one of them. Milbank could have written about the perseverance of many of my colleagues in the face of such adverse circumstances, but declined to do so. Milbank also ignores the critical fact picked up by the AP, CNN and other newsletters that at the very moment the hearing was scheduled to begin, the Republican Leadership scheduled an almost unprecedented number of 11 consecutive floor votes, making it next to impossible for most Members to participate in the first hour and one half of the hearing.

I used to have respect for your paper, Watergate and all, but these days you are going out of your way to bury a story, any story, that will make the current administration look bad.

I wonder, are you part of the cover up that led to the Iraq War? If you are, beware for you could be held accountable at the Hague when this is over. And yes, this will be over. For the moment I will share with you what real coverage looks like... maybe you can learn a lesson or two...

Forced to the basement of the US Capitol and prevented from holding an official hearing, Michigan representative John Conyers defied Republicans and held a forum on Thursday calling for a congressional inquiry into the infamous British document known as the "Downing Street memo".

Three dozen Democratic representatives shuffled in and out of a small room to join Mr Conyers in declaring that the Downing Street memo was the first "primary source" document to report that prewar intelligence was intentionally manipulated in order make a case for invading Iraq.


Not only did Republican leaders consign the Democrats to the basement, but Democrats also claimed that the House scheduled 11 votes concurrent with the forum to maximise the difficulty of attending it. Because the forum wasn't an official hearing, it won't become a part of the Congressional record - but members worked to make sure that the attending media and activists captured their words for posterity.

As he left, the mild but indefatigable Mr Conyers was a little angry that the forum was denied a proper room in the Capitol.

"They tried to shut us out," he said after the hearing. "They tried to cut us off. They put us in a tiny room. The significance shouldn't be lost on anybody."

Wouldn't it just put any of us in a mega energy phase to know over half a million people believed in going forward with a plan any of us came up with? That is why I feel strongly about putting my support out there when DEMS do the right thing, especially if they are criticized for doing it. John Conyers has been really going out of his way to acknowledge that the support of people like us has really helped him out and it seems to me that every word he says is heartfelt. After reading your article, “Democrats Play House to Rally Against the War,” I have come to a few theories:



1) You are a White House-paid flack, a lá Armstrong Williams;

2) You are gunning to replace Scott McClellan when he resigns out of the exhaustion from coming up with non-answers to White House reporters;

3) You are a nom de plume for John Guckert/Jeff Gannon;

4) You are auditioning for an on-line blog position for Roger Ailes.



Any of these are plausible excuses for the hatchet job of an article with your byline. Your article is one of the most singular examples of biased reporting I have come across this side of Rush Limbaugh and Fox News. How ironic that it comes on the anniversary of Woodward & Bernstein’s historic reporting of the Watergate scandal. To what depths has the Washington Post fallen? Once the towering member of the Fourth Estate that caused a corrupt administration to be held accountable, you have now traded your integrity for kneepads in service of a far more corrupt administration.



I know that people of your political bent don’t like to have little things like facts get in your way of mocking and patronizing, but I must address a few items in the interest of those of us in the “reality-based community”:



They pretended a small conference room was the Judiciary Committee hearing room, draping white linens over folding tables to make them look like witness tables and bringing in cardboard name tags and extra flags to make the whole thing look official.



I guess it’s inconvenient to note that the reason the meeting was held in a small basement room was because Rep. Sensenbrenner refused them access to a regular meeting room, the same congressman who violated points of order to end a Judiciary Committee meeting on the Patriot Act. Those calls of “obstructionism” so deftly laid on the doorstep of Democrats strangely never makes its way across the aisle. Do you think it coincidence that the House had ELEVEN votes during those three hours as well, a spurt of business not usually seen when Republicans are holding meetings?



Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) banged a large wooden gavel and got the other lawmakers to call him "Mr. Chairman." He liked that so much that he started calling himself "the chairman" and spouted other chairmanly phrases, such as "unanimous consent" and "without objection so ordered." The dress-up game looked realistic enough on C-SPAN, so two dozen more Democrats came downstairs to play along.



Seriously, could you be more patronizing if you tried? I’m sure that it is just an oversight and not intellectual dishonesty that caused you to neglect to mention that John Conyers was formerly the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and the honorific is simply bestowed on him in recognition of his past position. We still call Bill Clinton “Mr. President” although we all know he no longer holds the office.

In fact, Mr. Milbank, you neglected to mention (again an oversight I’m sure, far be it for you to suggest that Conyers is acting alone) that 122 House members have signed his petition, along with more than 560,000 American citizens.



Finally, you and the editors of the Washington Post owe Cindy Sheehan an apology for your tactless and heartless dismissal of her testimony. Ms. Sheehan entrusted President Bush with her most precious son. Just days after President Bush amused you at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner with his looking for WMDs under the table (to which I am sure you laughed heartily, comfortable in the smug knowledge of being part of the political majority), Casey Sheehan was killed in Iraq looking for those same WMDs, ones that according to the Downing Street Memo President Bush knew would not be found.



Apparently, invading a sovereign nation and militarily forcing a regime change (in violation of international law) is something with which Democrats should not be concerned. I watched the Democratic hearing on the Downing Street Memo on tv. I thought it was a very well though out and informative event that should have gotten a lot of media attention. The next morning I read what the Star Tribune/Washington Post has to say. I the first paragraph I can see a strong right wing bias. "Long-suffering House Democrats, in a basement", saying flags were brought in to make it look official. Come on? Perhaps you should mention that this was going to happen in typical house chambers, but republicans constantly blocked the request. They also tried to schedule votes during the meeting to disrupt and cancel it.


It says two dozen Democrats joined the meeting. What about the 122 members on congress that signed the letter to Bush demanding answers? Or better yet what about the 560,000 citizen co-sponsors? They mean nothing I guess because they did not get mentioned in the article.

If these memos are accurate the President committed impeachable acts. I do think it deserves a fair look, not just to be blown off in a news paper article. Tell both sides.

I support investigating issues. I support Norm Coleman's investigation of the UN oil-for-food program. I support investigation Gitmo, I strongly support investigating the contents of the Downing Street Memo.

I had already sent my letter to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, as soon as I read this morning's paper, with the article about these hearings on page 3A, not good enough for page 1 headlines including thee lead headline "Families of Klan victims share bond of grief at murder trial", with "Lawsuit: Mirant was DOA", followed by equally intriguing FRONT PAGE articles featuring stores of "Georgia's Guard: The 48th in Iraq" and "state forbids tolls on existing lanes".

By the way, the AJC page 3 article has the headline "War critics Target Bush - Democrats want probe of memo". It isn't quite as slanted as Mr. Milbank because the reporter evidently just wrote what he was told to write and didn't really have a lot of info on the subject.

Soon as I read this, I sent a copy to the author of that article, highlighting in red what his article has in common with the Post's! Don't want to get too paranoid, but I suspect this same "spin" version of that hearing is in most of the US papers today. Check yours out too!

Is it not disconcerting sir, that the whole question of whether or not the Bush Administration deceived the American Congress, media and people on an issue of such grave importance has received so very little attention in the Washington Post?

Am I incorrect if I read between the lines that the general attitude of your newspaper is, “Yah-yah--we know Bush lied. That’s not news.” Well sir, I would suggest that perhaps it might be news to many people.

Whereas every other news outlet managed to focus on the explosive substance of the meeting, Mr. Milbank decided to take another angle and discuss tablecloths and paper nameplates. At the same time, Mr. Milbank conveniently failed to mention that the reason behind the make-shift decorum was due to the fact that Conyers was denied a proper meeting room by Republicans. I write to express my profound disappointment with Dana Milbank's June 17 report, "Democrats Play House to Rally Against the War," In an inaccurate piece of reporting that typifies the article, Milbank implies that one of the obstacles the Members in the meeting have is that "only one" member has mentioned the Downing Street Minutes on the floor of either the House or Senate. This is not only incorrect but misleading. In fact, just yesterday, the Senate Democratic Leader, Harry Reid, mentioned it on the Senate floor. Senator Boxer talked at some length about it at the recent confirmation hearing for the Ambassador to Iraq. The House Democratic Leader, Nancy Pelosi, recently signed on to my letter, along with 121 other Democrats asking for answers about the memo. This information is not difficult to find either. For example, the Reid speech was the subject of an AP wire service report posted on the Washington Post website with the headline "Democrats Cite Downing Street Memo in Bolton Fight". Other similar mistakes, mischaracterizations and cheap shots are littered throughout the article.

I watched the Conyers Forum live on C-span 3. Where was Milbank's during that time? He could not have been watching, because any person with eyesight and hearing could not see the things he reported. Shame on Milbank's, shame on Washington Post. Washington Post should be, shame, shame! I am certain that by now you read the above referenced article in which Dana Milbanks reports on Congressman John Conyers’ recent public meeting regarding the Downing Street Memo. I am also certain that you had the opportunity to compare Mr. Milbanks’ written article to video coverage of the actual event, as the video coverage is available on various media outlets.

I hope you will agree that Mr. Milbanks’ article reflects a less-than-shining example of journalistic merit: that it broadly – almost proudly - demonstrates his bias; that it makes a mockery of what many people consider a gravely serious and important national issue; that it is condescending in nature to the point of being nearly antagonistic, and that it contains not only half-truths, but also outright falsity.

Mr. Milbanks’ article reads like propaganda, yet it was ensconced in your paper as an item of legitimate journalism.

I know that you do not have the time to personally proofread each item that goes into your daily newspaper, and I am sure there are occasions when, much to your chagrin, an ill-advised article slips past a conscientious editor and makes it to press. I hope this is one of those ill-advised articles that slipped past, and not representative of the way you intend to conduct your business.

Now that you know my position on Mr. Milbanks’ article, I would like to know yours. As journalists you wield tremendous power to influence public thinking, and with that power comes tremendous responsibility, including a fundamental allegiance to uncompromising integrity. Therefore, you would do a great service to your readers to publicly either support, or withdraw support, for Mr. Milbanks’ article. We need to know where you stand.

I just read John Conyers response to the non-coverage you gave his DSM meeting, the first tentative step down the road to impeachment of a president of the US of A.

Stories like these used to be considered pretty hot news not so long ago:
A phony war on terror,

the trashing of the environment,
the electoral fraud,
the military cronyism that benefits corporations like Halliburton which pay no US taxes,
the overt manipulation of the media to the extent that credibility is dead,
the medieval war tactics of these so called Christians,

and last but not least
the steady decline of the Middle Class.

Dear Sirs:

Milbank’s article reporting on the meeting on June 16, 2005, of House Democrats on the Downing Street Minutes is a disgrace to journalism and the memory of the once lofty journalistic reputation of WP.

“They pretended a small conference room was the Judiciary Committee hearing room, “ Milbank writes. “long-suffering House Democrats took a trip to the land of make-believe…” What the Post peddles by printing Milbank’s “Democrats Play House…” is lies, misleading statements, mischaracterizations, and a total absence of journalistic integrity.

However, Milbank’s efforts to discredit and ridicule the efforts of Conyers, the House Democrats, and the distinguished panelists at the meeting, one of whom lost a son in Iraq, backfire and disgust. All discerning readers see is Milbank’s partnership with the Washington Post on its fast-track spiral into the kind of yellow journalism worthy of turn-of-the-century Hearst. If the Post hadn’t already lost it’s integrity with it’s criminal lack of balanced and honest coverage of the decision to attack Iraq, and in support an administration that has continually lied to the American people, it now seals it’s tomb, becoming a monument to it’s own disgraceful and sordid fall.

Recently back from a trip to Washington after decades away, I have fresh and painful impressions of your city -- what used to be America’s proud capitol -- where copies of the Post are at the door of every hotel room and on every corner. The city now looks like the scene of a junta: makeshift and hastily constructed barriers create a labyrinth worthy of Minos, unhealthy air quality, sickening water, crumbling infrastructure -- over this disintegrating domain the Post presides.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans who signed the petition Conyers carried to the White House, demand an official congressional investigation, currently being blocked by the Republicans as the meeting so clearly demonstrated, of the evidence in the Downing Street minutes that the President of the United States deliberately and with malice and forethought misled the nation into war. If this evidence proves to be true, the president and members of his cabinet have committed high crimes against the nation as defined by the Constitution of the U.S. True journalistic coverage of the Downing Street Minutes and their import is missing in action from the Post. If high crimes have been committed, does the Post wish to be branded as a collaborator?

Prove that the Post is not. To do so requires an apology to the American people for Milbank’s article, and immediate, front-page, accurate and truthful coverage and investigation of this story.

It documents, as the MSM hasn't, that millions of Americans have taken to the streets and are marching against the * regime. "We the people" who are informed are not only standing in the streets with signs, we're writing, phoning, petitioning our legislators, fighting paperless e-voting, creating legislation and fighting for it in our states. Dear Ombudsman,
I can't believe that Dana Milbanks would write such a terrible piece about the Conyers meeting. Was that really him? The joking nature and talking points made it seem much more like Rove or PNAC itself.

The Democrats were shoved in the basement by an overpowering administration bent on destroying democracy. To see another example, look at Sensenbrenner slapping the gavel and finally closing his meeting. These folks apparently want to hide the truth. Don't let the Washington Post become another shill for the administration. It is time to get back to real journalism and Dana should apologize to Conyers and the country or else be fired. I have faith that he could reform if he steps back and looks at reality.

The Washington Post article "Democrats Play House To Rally Against the War" by Dana Milbank was so clearly partisan that one would expect it to be the work of Fox News rather than the Washington Post.

I suggest you send Mr. Milbank back to journalism school or replace him with a fresh mind that hasn't lost touch with the tenet of objectivity.

His "reporting" looks to an outsider like that of an apologist for the Bush Administration. At the very least the article should have been relegated to the opinion pages. That's where the junk with bias and inflammatory language belongs.

I know you have to agree that peice of work is not an example of objective news reporting. Why was it given such prominence? Why was there no straight and factual news reporting to give balance to Mr. Milbank's opinion? Does the Washington Post agree that anyone who opposes Bush policies are "playing" at government? I followed the hearing on the Downing Street Minutes because I thought it was important. I was hoping the Washington Post would report on what happened at the meeting in a factual manner. I learned nothing from Mr. Milbank's "report" other than that he hates Democrats.

Congressman John Conyers has more integrity in his pinky than Mr. Milbank and his neocon heroes have combined. The Washington Post needs to realize that writers like Mr. Milbank and Ann Coulter are adding to the hate and divisiveness in this country by vilifying someone who is very well respected by a vast number of Americans.

After it was discovered that the mainstream media, including the Washington Post, acted as highly paid stenographers for the Bush Administration during the build-up to war in Iraq, many members of the press acted penitent. Their behavior falsely led me to believe that members of the press would become more objective when it came to covering the lies that led us to war. Unfortunately, after reading Mr. Milbank's article on the congressional Downing Street Memo meeting, I have discovered I was duped again. It is hard to remember reading a more clear example of a smear piece from a supposedly impartial source. I have come to believe that the Washington Post will never get it - that they will always be a puppet propaganda tool for Bush and the Republicans. occuring now. It has a proud history and some very good people work there. How Don Graham can let this happen to his and his family's paper is beyond me. The Star Tribune is a great paper, but they recently hired this woman whom we call the "Church Lady." She rages and opines constantly. She offers no real reporting. I think they brought her on to shut up the religious right. But it doesn't make sense since the vast majority of people in the Twin Cities are liberals and they see through her crap and write to the paper complaining about her all the time.

It's mainly the suburbs and exburbs (outer ring burbs) that are theocons. I wish they would publish their own newspaper.

In your recent article entitled "Democrats Play House to Rally Against the War," you do your readers a great disservice with your sarcastic comments. Instead of "reporting" on the actual substance of the meeting you chose to ignore the facts being presented and mislead your readers about the "ambience" of the room in which the meeting was held. I noticed that you completely ignored the reason why this meeting was held in the basement of the Capitol building. This is your version of journalism?

Perhaps if you would have done your job as an investigative reporter prior to the lead-up to the Iraq War, you wouldn't feel so defensive about protecting your fragile, overblown ego. The facts about the deceptions of the Bush administration regarding their motivations and actions to invade Iraq are cumulative. If you would have paid attention to the "content" of the recent DSM hearing you would have realized this! The Downing Street Minutes is simply another piece of evidence illustrating the intentions and deceit of the Bush/Blair administrations.
