Poll question: How much does your household spend on GASOLINE?
Edited on Fri Jun-17-05 03:35 PM by UdoKier
How much does your household spend on GASOLINE?

Per week, all cars/motorbikes in household combined.

Not including gas used for work as a long-distance trucker, deliveries, etc.

(PSST! If you're using over $50 per week, you really should move closer to work, or try transit or something...)

4. Is that $50 a week PER PERSON? Cause we average about
$250/mo and while my trip is approx 17 miles one way, missus fob's trip is 8 miles, roundtrip! So any move that puts me closer puts her farther away.

7. That's per household. Per week.

I guess you have a unique situation...

Maybe one of those hybrid deals would help...

19. I don't know if it's so unique.
10 trips at 17 miles plus 5 lunch trips of 3 each = 185 miles per week for work only

Fill up costs $40 bucks which gets me not quite 15 gallons, I fill up 5 times a month and the missus 1 and a half.

That doesn't leave a lot of foolin' around driving and we are at $60 plus a week easy. The difference is that fucker in the white house still hasn't "jawboned" his saudi masters.

5. About $30
But about $20 in the summer since I am a school teacher and do not have to drive to work.

I have to drive about 35 mi each way to the school where I teach. In my 32-34 mpg saturn, that's about $10-$12 a week.

I am interviewing for a closer job (about 15 mi) to cut that down.

The sad thing is that I could take public transit, but until this spring, it cost more money and still takes WAY more time. So I commute and buy electricity from a wind generator to salve my conscience. B-)

9. $100 + / week...
'Course, that's $CDN and gas at Canadian prices, so it's not quite an apples to apples comparison. More like apples to pears.

10. I rate around fifty to sixty dollars a week
Most of that is in commuting. However, I just moved to the country, and am not going back to the city. In our personal plans, moving back to the city would be a foolish move. For in the next five years we're going to have wood heating installed, along with a windmill and solar panels. Additionally, in that time span, we'll be needing at least one new car, if not a new car and truck. Both will be diesel, and I will be making our own biodiesel. In a city, I could persue none of these options, for zoning laws in most cities are quite rigid concerning these matters.

In addition, I'm growing an ever increasing amount of our own food, and within two years will be doing commercial crops, and/or subscription farming. Again, none of this is possible in a city.

Besides, when peak oil hits, and things start going south quickly, a city is the last place you wish to be.

So yes, I'm burning a bit more gas than I should, however within five years my fossil fuel consumption will be reduced to virtually nothing, excluding plastic products. Still think I should move back to a city?

13. about 27-30 dollars/week
I fill up a 20 gallon chevy conversion van once a week. I mostly only ride back and forth to work. And maybe ride to the next town over for shopping on the weekends. I don't take it on long trips anymore.

14. Zero.
I walk to stores, bank, park, resteraunts, whatever. My SO generally walks to and from work, but sometimes his buddy will pick him up and take him home since they work the same shift. We couldn't afford to drive anyways, even if we wanted to. :).

16. Good question.
I really am not sure. Since retiring, I drive very little. I put $10 in yesterday; the last time I bought gas was just before Memorial Day weekend.

My wife drives back and forth to work, 12 miles each way. Then there is dance classes, etc, with the kids. She estimates that she spends about $20 a week.

Our oldest son, 21, drives to work, which is 2 and 1/2 miles away. He also drives his brother and him all over to "socialize." Though he has a small car, he goes through gas at a fast rate. I don't even like to think about how much $$$ they spend on gas.

17. About $25 a week.
I live 19 miles one way from work. Public transportation is a non-starter here. I live in Arlington, TX and work in North Ft. Worth. Wish they did have good mass transit!

at scary CA gas prices. We're trying to reduce that somewhat, hopefully we'll be doing some of our errands with the bikes and trailer soon.

That's household total. We only have one car and no other gas powered devices like lawn mowers or boats.

20. if I had a car, I'd probably be broke right now ...
Luckily I'm living in a city with adequate transit and conveniently-located services -- and my job schedule and location allow me to walk or bus. Plus, I don't have a family (having kids or aged parents would likely require a vehicle). I'm going to try to keep this up as long as possible, but eventually I'm probably going to have to get a car (due to moving, new job, or whatever). Meanwhile, I'm hearing horror stories from my friends about unexpected repair expenses, skyrocketing insurance, and gas prices. I'm just scraping by as it is.
