Billmon says: Build our OWN hearing room (with walnut paneling!)
Edited on Fri Jun-17-05 09:39 PM by scottxyz
I think this is a great idea. They want to stuff the Dems in the basement - why not just set up a nice telegenic hearing room and hold the hearings there? Billmon "gets" the theater aspect of American news. I think the Dems need to take his advice. Being right is one thing - getting the message heard and taken seriously can sometimes come down to just some oak panelling and plush blue carpets:

Of course, the Democrats don't have access to an official hearing room. I don't see any reason, though, why the party couldn't build its own, one that closely resembles, say, the House or Senate Judiciary Committee's hearing room -- same walnut paneling, high ceiling and crystal chandeliers, same solid oak table for the witness, massive dais for the members, plush blue carpet, etc. etc. They could put it in an office building somewhere close to the Capitol complex and let Democratic House and Senate members hold their unofficial hearings there.

1. Wasn't sure...
If he meant the Dems buying out of their own personal connections/funds or, if he was imagining a groundswell of private & public citizens/amateur home-repair types showing up to build something?

2. Just rent a room near Capitol hill
And put some oak paneling and plush blue carpets in it.

You think the Repubs wouldn't do this if they wanted to take down a President?

We could take Bush down so EASY now, if we just learned to fight hard.

5. Okay, I see
But I imagine that private citizens showing up to build something would make better television.

"Power of the people" and that sorta thing.

If appearance matters that much, then go to the masters of appearance.
