There was complete complete freedom of religeon in his empire. While he worshipped the Eternal Blue Sky, his mother, wife and sons were christian, and his tribe was christian, muslim, buddhist. His large empire facilitated the movement of knowlegde, technology and goods between asia and europe. He invented the first and largest postal system. He was a pioneer in diplomacy (He even had women ambassadors), often his rampages came about when is ambassadors were murdered. There was nothing he did that didn't happen anywhere else at that time. Heck, the mongols had a torture taboo, they felt that it was disrespectful to the soul (both of the victim and torturer) to torture and dismember people while the christians of the time made it into a fetish.
The guy was an orphan from the lowliest tribe who started out as a slave to become the ruler of the largest geographical empire ever. For all the horrible things that he was responsible for, he changed the world in many ways for the better.
