newt.org: Gingrich calls for censure of Durbin
In a letter sent to United States Senators on Saturday, June 18, 2005, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich called on the Senate to censure Senator Richard Durbin for his speech comparing U.S. servicemen serving in Guantanamo Bay to those of the Nazi Gestapo, Soviet KGB, and Pol Pot's killers in Cambodia.

"Senator Richard Durbin has dishonored the United States and the entire U.S. Senate. Only by a vote to censure Senator Durbin for his conduct can the U.S. Senate restore its dignity and defend American honor," Gingrich wrote.

He added, "It's one thing for one Senator to endanger young Americans and defame America; it would the shame of the Senate if the other 99 Senators did not stand up to defend America and to defend the reputation of our young men and women in uniform."

Gingrich called Senator Durbin's comparison "despicable."

The first wife was battling another illness when he left her, too.

I just read it in David Brock's book.

7. Hay Newt - Senator Durbin is more PATRIOT than you will ever hope to know!
Newt is clueless that disent is the highest form of patriotism. The facts speak for themselves, and I believe that history will judge Senator Durbin as one of the brave patriots during America's Dark Hours.

8. Well, knock yourself out Newt! Ya know, I had a newt in a fish tank
a long time ago. He was a cute little thing, but pretty stupid! He kept crawling out of the tank, and I kept putting him back. One day, I didn't find him in time, and he died, shriveled up, and was sucked up in the sweeper!

Suppose we can hope that happens to the Newt from Ga? (Yea, I live in Ga. Sorry few people around here listen to me!)

10. Torture is despicable
Senator Durbin's point is that to engage in this behavior is unacceptable for American soldiers under any circumstances. And Senator Durbin is right.

Senator Durbin owes no one an apology and it is absurd to suggest that he be censured.

If Mr. Gingrich is defending torture, then he owes Americans an apology.

11. What about Cheney and Santorum?
Didn't Santorum compare Dems to Nazi's?
Didn't Cheney use the fu against Dems?

I know there are other good examples.

Why aren't they being censured?

17. If Nuremberg Trials Ever Come to America
The role you played should be in the proceedings Newt.

You want to censure? Censure Senator Warner. If he had done his job as chairman of the Armed Services Committee, Durbin wouldn't be speaking now. Where is the follow up to the Taguba Report? Warner was going to get to the bottom of Abu Ghraib? Warner is concerned about the effect of Durbin's remarks on the insurgents and putting our troops at increased risk? Horsefeathers. The Iraqi's know what's going on - some prisoners and photos have gotten out of Abu Ghraib. You guys are hidding behind our troops.

Even the Washington Post has asked in an editorial when Warner is going to do his job? Now that Washington has become Chicago (tap tap tap) Durbin should have walked over to Warner and done an Al Capone on him.

The issue isn't semantics, sensitivity, Senate protocol, or rhetoric that will energize an enemy. The issue is a public that is absolutely positively fed up with the lies, deceit, obstructionism, manipulation, bullying and character assassination that has become the fundamental philosophy of the Republican Party.

And another thing, what the hell is the ADL doing coming down on Durbin?

28. That's precisely the point. Torture as a policy...
I frankly do not recognize my country anymore. The current administration has taken the view that the president is above the law or outside the law (yes, really), thus granting him powers that do not exist in the Constitution.

And Bush, according to Bob Woodward, feels that he does not owe anybody an explanation. Do taxpayers realize that this clown thinks he's beyond accountability?

And we wouldn't be having conversations about what Durbin said if actual abuse and torture hadn't taken place.

The administration has made us far LESS SAFE, thanks to its policies, for the rest of the world isn't sitting around nodding in agreement with, say, Hannity or O'Reilly. We are creating enemies and possible decades of trouble from this, mark my words. The arrogance, incompetence, immorality, and short-sightedness of the current administration have created a nightmare scenario in terms of national security and long-term foreign policy. It's time to sweep clean, to make government accountable again.

And the press sure as hell better get its act in gear. This is a very dangerous situation, and they're not turning up the pressure on the corrupt administration.

18. Durbin needs to give the Cheney apology:
"I expressed myself rather forcefully, felt better after I had done it," Cheney told Neil Cavuto of Fox News. "I think that a lot of my colleagues felt that what I had said badly needed to be said, that it was long overdue."
