The Friedman Solution: Reinstate the Draft
http://www.dissidentvoice.org/June05/Whitney0618.htm

When America’s foremost political pundit and spokesman for the powerful Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), Tom Friedman, says it’s time to reinstate the draft, we should all pay attention. Friedman’s comments appeared in his June 15 column where he reiterated his past predictions that the war in Iraq was still “winnable” if we “do it right.” What’s needed, Friedman postulates, is to “double the boots on the ground and redouble the diplomatic effort to bring in the Sunnis.”

“Double the boots on the ground”?

Sounds like the draft to me.

Tom is no fool; he realizes he won’t change the minds of Americans who’ve already soured on the war. A recent Gallop poll indicates that a whopping 59% of Americans are already sick of Iraq and want to see the troops withdrawn. Friedman’s missive is directed to the slender 10% minority (according to Gallup) who think that we should increase the number of troops. Presumably, that figure includes a dwindling number of “die-hard” Bush loyalists as well as the .01% of elites who actually run the country behind the mask of democratic government.

Friedman’s remedy is a straightforward call for a draft. He’s well aware that Iraq will not be “pacified” without a massive commitment of American troops. His logic supports the conclusions of General Shinseki who lost his job by telling Congress that America would need “several hundred thousand troops” to secure the country. Friedman’s reasoning is at loggerheads with the recalcitrant Rumsfeld who admits no mistakes and is determined to continue the current policy despite its disastrous results. Embracing the idea of a draft would be an admission of failure, something that Rumsfeld’s fragile vanity could never endure. This means that we should expect to see a steady decline in morale, severe recruitment problems, and the growing signs of an overextended and fractured military.

Friedman blames our current problems in Iraq on everyone even loosely connected to the fiasco. Republicans are to blame because they think their job is just to “applaud whatever the Bush team does.” Democrats are to blame because they “don’t want the Bush team to succeed.” Iraqis are to blame because they “have not risen to the magnitude of the opportunity before (them)” and because they have not produced a strong and independent leader like (I’m not making this up) “Hamid Karzai.” But the man that Friedman blames more than any other is Donald Rumsfeld. As Friedman sees it, the “core problem in Iraq remains Donald Rumsfeld’s decision to invade Iraq on the cheap.” In other words, Friedman has no moral objections to the war; he simply disparages the invasion in terms of its effectiveness in achieving the imperial objectives.

Wandering around the accident site with some sort of brain injury Tom vaguely remembers when he confidently predicted an iraqi-Israeli coaltion.

that draft dodging of this so-called war will mightily dwarf that of the Vietnam war.

I wouldn't be all that surprised, would you?

General JC Christian has a solution Friedman would love--send all those chickenhawk College Republicans!

Objective: To motivate the College Republicans to vigorously defend the vital work they're doing defending the homefront by holding affirmative action bake sales, immigrant hunts, and subsidizing the Scaife funding of Ann Coulter, David Horowitz, and Michelle Malkin (see post below for more detail).

Method: Embarrass the College Republicans by challenging them to volunteer to fight in the war they demanded.

Mode: Nonviolent Leaderless Creative Expression

Target: 56th College Republican Biennial Convention
June 24-26, 2005
Crystal Gateway Marriott
Arlington, Virginia

Deployment: Red team, Metro Washington DC; Blue Team, nation-wide.

Weaponry: Flyers, posters, stickers, video cameras, video cameras, still cameras, digital communications, humor, irony, creativity.

7. I know this will not be popular, but...
The DRAFT would awake the apathy that is here in our great Nation. Right now, the war is "something going on over there" but is has little effect on the day to day lives of most Americans.

The DRAFT would make the goings on in BushCo very very much the discussion around every table in America. The Draft is in fact the quickest road to impeachment, republican distruction, and more.

The DRAFT means it is not something someone else is dealing with, but evert person with a 18 - 21 year old...

10. No, a draft would not include every 18 - 21 year old as you suggest
It will only include the 18 - 21 year olds who are not wealthy or connected. Nice thought though.

24. So restrict deferments.
Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 08:48 AM by ovidsen
Sure, there are some 18-21 year olds who shouldn't be ordered into the military. People who are disabled, or the sole support of a family, for example.

But eliminate all the other excuses for not serving. Start with the deferment for college students. Do that, and any draft will be the shortest the US has ever had.

edited for spelling.

26. Won't work
People who can afford to build up a medical case for junior won't see their kids drafted. Other people who can't afford to do the same will be drafted.

30. I respectfully disagree
Structure disability draft deferment in such a way that it's extremely difficult (and expensive) for fakers to avoid serving. Sure, Paris Hilton and her ilk will have the means to avoid conscription, but almost no one else will, short of (literally) shooting themselves in their feet.

Once the upper middle class toadies realize that they'll have to sell their McMansions and SUVs to keep Buffy and Jody out of uniform, and away from a war that in their hearts they know is wrong, opposition to the draft will skyrocket.

BTW, check out this thread (if you haven't already) about protests planned for the College Republican National Convention set to begin this Friday in Arlington, Virginia. (Thank you lateo!)

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3901083

I heartily agree with the goals of the protests organizers. It's time young, able bodied GOPers signed up and shipped out for the war that they so heartily endorse.

On a personal note, I think it's SO appropriate that this convention is being held in the Crystal City section of Arlington. I used to work there. It's a magnificently ugly development, two Metro stops from the Pentagon, that's just chock full of defense contractors. Truly a pimple on the ass of the state of Virginia.

22. I agree. But I don't want a Democrat sponsoring the bill.
Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 08:38 AM by IanDB1
I don't think I want a Democrat voting for it, either.

Let the war and the draft be an albatross around the neck of the Republicans.

Let the Democrats say something like:

"The pResident said he had a mandate, so let him use that mandate to support the war that he says the American people elected him to fight. He has the donor lists. He has the mailing lists. He has the voter registration records. Let him turn to those same people who supported his campaign and ask THEM to fight and ask THEM to send THEIR children to support the war that THEY voted for."

It's THEIR mandate let THEM fight THEIR war.

Viet Nam swallowed up nearly half a million troops at one time, and it still didn't turn the trick. Iraq would be the same.

18. Yes, his latest "the earth is flat" stuff is very tedious.
I tried to read a feature article of his based on this idea - it was very mundane. He reminds me of someone who comes up with a (to him) pithy phrase, then builds a book full of neo-con boiler plate around it.

19. You speak the truth
We kept feeding troops into Vietnam and nothing really changed except the causality numbers.

If the population does not want to be occupied, there is no way to force it on them. You can bomb them flat, but there will be one person left who will pop up and fire at you.

Just imagine how this country would welcome an occupying army. I don't think it would be with flowers and sweets.

59% want the troops out. 10% want more troops.

In a democracy, we should obviously do what the 10% want. duh.

20. They'll decide that the problem with Iraq is that it's full of Iraqis
The only way to end the "insurgency" is a program of Neutron-bombing and chemical weaponry.

But don't call it Genocide or Ethnic Cleansing. It will be called "Clear Cutting."

And there will be ZERO "collateral damage" because nobody would be a non-target.

25. DRAFT = REVOLUTION + IMPEACHMENT + GOP NEVER WINS AGAIN
Just try and start a draft and see how fast the revolution start, the impeachment trials start and see how many elections the GOP LOSES.

A draft will lead this country into chaos and THEN WE GET OUR IMPEACHMENT!!

Waiting for the IMPEACHMENT WHILE THE SCANDALS KEEP UNFOLDING

29. Called the Navy. They were un-aware of the convention, too.
So far, neither the Army nor the Navy had been contacted to cover this event.

I was told to call Navy Public Affairs:
804-771-2001 ext 126

I spoke to a chief there, who transfered me to The Enlistment Programs Officer. The person in charge wasn't in, so I gave a message to their assistant.

He asked me what I wanted The Navy to do there at the convention.

I said maybe you could set-up a booth in the lobby. "Or, you could just walk around talking to people like you do at the mall. These are all people who supported the pResident and his policies, so you should have easy pickings there." I told him to call Stephanie Holmes to work-out the details.

So, if anyone else wants to call, the number is 804-771-2001 and ask for The Enlistment Programs Officer.

My next call is going to be to The Young Marines.
