I just walked my two 65-lb+ black dogs down Main Street in downtown Greenville, SC. On the sidewalk downtown we spotted a slightly smaller black male mutt coming toward us. He spotted my dogs and veered away. I could see that he did not have a collar.
Although the dog approached people on the sidewalk, he would not let me get too close with my two dogs. I was trying to find something to tie my dogs to or someone to hold their leashes while I could get my belt off and around the little fellow's neck.
Before I could do that, he got to the busy corner by the Hyatt Hotel. The fast street had the green light. Traffic on that street comes off of I-385 and drivers are still in a very fast mind-set. I cringed as the little dog trotted out into the speeding traffic. Two female runners on the other side of the five-lane one-way street covered their eyes. Then one stepped into the street and held up her hands to stop traffic. The little dog approached her.
Across the street from me, the two runners held the dog and soothed him. One yelled back to me to see if he was my dog. "No," I said, "and he appears to be afraid of my dogs."
She reached down and peeled her top off. She had a sports bra on underneath. She eased the little dog's head through one of the sleeves (he didn't seem to mind). They turned and headed back north on Main Street. The little dog was now safely on a makeshift lease, oblivious and happy.
I stayed back a bit, not wanting to spook the little dog. At my condo, I yelled my thanks to the two women. They waved back and said that they would take care of the dog. I was probably the only one around who knew that the woman with the little black dog and the funny white leash was walking up Main Street in a pair of running shorts and a sports bra. Bless her animal-loving heart!
