My prediction: Quantanamo is much, much worse than anyone thought...
Edited on Sun Jun-19-05 12:49 PM by kentuck
An isolated corner in an isolated country, with no oversight and with prison guards with complete control over their prisoners, is a recipe for an embarrassing and complete disaster. Psychological studies and human nature can help us predict abuses that might happen in situations like Quantanamo and others. Durbin will turn out to be more right than few now imagine, in my opinion. There is no one more cruel than the American soldier when put into situations of control over others. Americans are naive to think our good soldiers would never resort to torture or other criminal acts. We need an immediate investigation.

1. I'll repeat again what Mark Levine said...
he hosts The Inside Scoop (www.radioinsidescoop.com), and says a highly reliable source he has inside the Pentagon claims that over TWO THOUSAND prisoners from Iraq and Afghanistan have been killed in US-run prisons. His source says that this will come out eventually, but they'll try to keep it quiet for as long as they can.

2. Agreed. Our shame is just beginning ...
Sooner or later, the atrocities will be exposed. The U.S. will be forced to do some serious soul-searching.

22. A lot of "suicides" in US prisons are murders by the guards.
Edited on Sun Jun-19-05 03:49 PM by Vitruvius
And -- in the old days -- it was amazing how many convicts were "shot while trying to escape" from picking cotton...

I'd be amazed if Gitmo or any of our other gulags were any different.

8. if those photos show
a child being raped, that will be the end of them for sure. Any republican will be a child rape apologist. They voted for *, which rubber stamped it and made them all complicit.

16. Sy Hersch said
that the children screaming can be heard on the yet to be released Abu Graib videos. Children being sodomized. On video. In a US "run "prison".

I recall someone else who once said "The Iraqi people don't have to worry about rape rooms anymore."

7. Since we already have our concentration camps here in
Edited on Sun Jun-19-05 01:14 PM by Cleita
the 48, I'm sure our concentration camps on foreign soil are worse. I am talking about our prison system here that has largely been privatized. The prisoners are brutalized in many ways. They are forced to work for companies outside of the prison with very little compensation. Isn't this a gulag? A forced labor camp?

I think we need to start cleaning our house at home and at a local level. Make all these government agencies and especially our representatives accountable.

10. I don't think you're going out on a limb there
I think your prediction will prove accurate, and frankly, I think Abu Ghraib and Gitmo are the My Lai of this generation.

19. Here are a couple, the first is the one you are thinking about I think.
"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall -- think of it, ALWAYS."

"The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problems."

13. My prediction: even worse things go on at Diego Garcia
the island where the British government threw out the inhabitants (it was a colony), handed it over to the Americans as an Indian Ocean airbase, and they are almost certainly holding prisoners. As far as I can tell, the Red Cross has still not been allowed to visit. The US controls all entry to the island.

15. I was watching a repeat of the Judiciary
Committee hearings on torture. Some former Attorney General under Bush I, said that those prisoners in Gitmo are not treated any worse than our prisoners here in the US. Senator Leahy was trying to make a point before Specter closed the hearings, but he was having a hard time because Sessions kept interrupting. Finally, Leahy got to say that the prisoners here in the US had been tried and convicted, as opposed to just "charged" at Gitmo.

17. Agreed. And, once all the facts are known about Abu Ghraib, we ...
.... will see "America" classified as barbaric (when folk are being kind) for a very long time.

24. Most definitely
so is Abu Ghraib

I don't believe we know the full extent of torture at AG either. Not even with the new set of pictures soon to be released...

But to be honest, I do think what will eventually come out about Gitmo will be explosive.

Explosive... As soon as a former guard is transferred or exits the military and becomes enlightened enough to know what was done was inhumane and criminal. Where will he get the enlightenment?
