Angelina Jolie Walks out on CNN Interview...
This was supposed to be an interview about Jolie's role as a UN goodwill ambassador. Andrea Koppel, CNN's State Department correspondent decided that viewers didn't need to hear all that boring stuff, so she started hammering Jolie with questions about her sex life. The final exchange between Blitzer and Koppel proves once again, that CNN is to news what Bush is to democracy.

After showing exactly one question about her "work," the intriguing and/or inquiring minds at CNN switched to talking about Brad Pitt:

KOPPEL: How do you feel about, you know, the tabloids focusing so much attention on your sex life, as opposed to focusing on the issues that really --

JOLIE: Well, that's why they're the tabloids. But, you know, I hope just people can make a line between what's the "New York Times" and what's "Star Magazine." Do you know what I mean?

KOPPEL: But more people, unfortunately, read "Star Magazine" than the "New York Times."

JOLIE: Yeah, that's -- I can't -- you know, I don't read those things. I just hope that you just live your life and hope that the good things come through and that the other things kind of fade away that aren't -- you can't really do anything about it but keep focusing forward.

KOPPEL: I know that you have inspired -- I'm sure, lots of people -- but one of them was your former co-star in Mrs. Smith to get involved in this. Do you --

JOLIE: I don't think I was -- he's always -- he always seemed like somebody -- you know, the first day of working together, that was very conscious. So I think it was a matter of time.

KOPPEL: Are you proud of him?

JOLIE: Of course.

BLITZER: That's when they ended the interview.

KOPPEL: They wrapped us, they gave us the hook. So, I tried to find out. I'm sorry, I couldn't. Is she dating him or isn't she, we still don't know.

BLITZER: Well, intriguing minds want to know the answer to that question.

KOPPEL: Inquiring minds...

what the Times was once (sometimes) and the Times becomes what you page through while waiting to get your hair cut.

Angelina is beautiful. She has style, but most of all, she has substance.
Now she has learned, with the rest of them, why CNN is not worth watching.

And who cares how many more people read Star than the NYT? (Is it true, though?) How is that a basis for a rational justification of treating Angelina like a tabloid queen?

CNN's slogan should be, "Just like Republicans, we cater to the lowest common denominator."

I read Star magazine. I also read the NYTimes.

I've got news for Koppel...the two aren't mutually exclusive. Just because I enjoy my weekly dose of tabloid gossip doesn't mean I shun real news.

Why don't they stay the hell out of their private lives?! Joline came on to talk about her work (which is a wonderful thing) and they want to know if she's screwing around with Brad Pitt. Good fucking grief! WHORES! Our "news" is the national enquirer (if not worse)!

What a tool.

Leslie, enquiring minds really want to know how you've managed to keep your job this long. I'm guessing it involves copious supplies of Chap-Stik and K-Y jelly.

13. It's Andrea Koppel who is pathetic in this case, not Ted.
I mention this only because the last I heard about Ted was the guff he took when Nightline aired the photos of each dead US soldier to honor them -- and some stations refused to air the show. I admired him for doing it anyway and I know that it changed a few hearts who watched.

16. Me, too!
We came across, late at night, a movie she made with Antonio Banderas that I'd never even heard of, called "Original Sin," and it was excellent! I gotta go find the DVD.

I mean, it was really great. I suspect her exotic and slightly frightening looks - she's that beautiful - very often obscure her very, very fine talent and work. She's a damn good actress, and I suspect she's going to handle the press in a way that it's never been handled before.

This article at salon.com got her just right: http://tinyurl.com/9f6y5

Andrea Koppel - let's see. Where would she be without Daddy, do you think?

her new movie and provide a fix for her endless addiction to media coverage (Have you ever read some of her answers to questions in interviews? They are all 'attention-getting.') She sets herself up for publicity by releasing the photos of her playing 'family' on a beach with a (then) married man, then actually gets annoyed when she's asked about her relationship w. that man? LOL.

If Jolie was such a good citizen, why didn't she campaign against Bush and/or speak out against the war in Iraq? Oh, I'm sorry. She was too busy thinking of ways to get publicity for herself.

BTW, I detest CensoringNewsNetwork - just making a point.

And she's not a good citizen if she doesn't? I don't get it.

That's like Republicans accusing wealthy Democrats of being hypocrites because they don't donate all their money to charity. That puts a person in an unfair and unwinnable situation.

eta:
Academy Award and three-time Golden Globe winner Angelina Jolie was appointed as UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador in 2001. Since her appointment, Ms. Jolie has made arduous field visits to meet with refugees in Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Côte d'Ivoire, Cambodia, Pakistan, Namibia and Thailand. She released diaries that she kept during her visits to Sierra Leone and Tanzania on the Internet to publicize the work of UNHCR. http://www.un.org/advocates/bios2.htm

I'm sure there's more out there if you care to look.

29. Indeed. I've read interviews with her in other publications that focused
almost entirely on the plight of refugees and orphans in those regions, the need for debt relief and foreign aid, world hunger, and her adoption of an orphan from one of the camps that she visited. A human being can only do so much with the time they've been given, and I dare say that she does more good with hers than most.

37. I don't watch Reichwing CNN, but Koppel did 'her job' - she asked the
questions her bosses ('reading' the public) wanted to know. She made sure the media got the photos of her and Pitt while her movie was wrapping - common sense dictates that she would then be asked about her and Pitt.

Is it a lie - that more people read Star Magazine than the New York Times? No, Koppel is right.

Jolie should stand up and talk about the *causes* of poverty in the world - the Bush regime, globalization, etc. But she won't. She'd rather sit w. a Bush whore (Condi Rice) at a photo op.

for a news channel. this is something that should be on VH1 or E! Everyone has their own causes and hers isn't about defeating bushco. Everyone has their own perogatives and I respect that.

She is a star with zillions and doesn't have to even do what she does. I admire that.

As for her sitting next to Condi, it's for a charity function. You make it sound like because she had to sit next to Condi that she embraces all the RW drivel. Makes no sense.

I thought people watched the E channel or Entertainment Tonight for that kind of thing.

Journalists are professionals - as such, ignoring more urgent news in favor of trivia is a violation of everything they've been trained to do. Professionalism implies responsibility and adherence to certain ethics. They teach this sort of thing in professional schools, you know.

It's no different than a doctor being lax in his or her judgment because a patient is a hypochondriac or demanded certain unnecessary medication.

person wanted/wants to know; he was honest. Jolie makes her millions off of that 'interest.'

As to me (and likely, most DUers), we have *zero* interest in 'who is dating who.' But, how many people have heard of George Galloway and know about Patriot II? Maybe a few folks, but nationally, not that many. We're not 'average.'

55. No, but I am sick and tired of reading Jolie's comments about her own...
personal life. Example: "S&M sex can be misinterpreted as violence, (but) it's really about trust. I like to push boundaries... that's when I've felt the sexiest." --October 2004, cited in Star Magazine, May 16.

My point is that if celebrities make these statements to the media, why on God's green earth would they expect to *not* be questioned on the topics that *they* raised?

Jolie's charity and refugee work still should be appreciated by everyone. But, people should not jump all over the CNN correspondents for asking the questions on the topics that *she, herself* raised.

The trade-off for the stars making millions of dollars per year in the entertainment industry is that the fans want to know personal information about the celebrities... Stars want the publicity. Trust me, Angelina Jolie would go nuts if they didn't ask about her dating situation, etc..
