BTC News White House correspondent Eric Brewer, the first correspondent to introduce the Downing Street Memo at a White House briefing, has been following the number of results returned by a Google search for the phrase, “Downing Street Memo.” On May 1, the number was near zero. On June 18, the number had reached 1,320,000 in a search for the exact phrase and 1,510,000 for the three words.

The path to war

After receiving astonishingly little notice for more than a month, the so-called Downing Street memo, concerning the road to war in Iraq, is finally beginning to command attention in Washington and the media.

The document, first disclosed May 1 by a British newspaper, is actually notes of a July 23, 2002, meeting of top British national security and intelligence officials at the London residence of Prime Minister Tony Blair. It summarizes a report by Richard Dearlove, then head of British intelligence's MI6 unit, who had just returned from a visit to Washington.
