BIDEN "bankruptcy bill supporter" - wants YOUR support for President
US Senator Biden early contender for Democratic presidential nomination Sun Jun 19, 1:40 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Senator Joseph Biden became the first Democrat to openly acknowledge plans to run for the White House in 2008, telling CBS television that he will pursue his party's presidential nomination.

"My intention now is to seek the nomination," Biden told CBS television's "Face the Nation" program.

12. Biden Followed His Senate Leader, Harry Reid, On The Bankruptcy Bill
Reid took credit for leading Senate passage of the "tort reform" class action and bankruptcy bills.

Was Biden merely following the leader of the Democratic Party in the Senate? Don't let Reid off the hook!

33. Reid Won't Run
He might like to endorse Biden but can't because of his position as leader of the Democratic Party in the Senate. And if Reid announced his running for the nomination he'd probably have to step down from his position.

Reid isn't and won't be a candidate. Biden is a far more effective spokesman and campaigner than Reid. Biden's commitment and long years of service to big corporate interests is noted.

However, it should be noted that it was Reid who moved the bankruptcy bill forward and that Biden just tagged along. If Reid had opposed the bill it's possible that Biden would have voted against it. Please .... give credit where credit is due!

3. Geez, he works in Delaware, you can't walk 5 feet in No. DE
and not run into someone working for the credit card companies including myself.

This is just like Mary Landrieu supporting ANWR drilling even though she's a democrat because she's in an oil state of Louisiana.

39. My local reps support Big Pharma
Biden isn't my boy (I'm a Clark supporter) but he didn't have a choice. His constitiuents work for these evil bastards - it's such a tiny state - credit cards, chemicals, and chicken-processing - mess with these and Delawareans scream.

I actually expect my local reps to defend Big Pharma (up to a certain point), because it provides a huge proportion of the jobs in the Philadelphia metro area, including mine.

Oxes being gored and all that.

46. Actually we don't
the jobs pay well which is why I've worked for one of them (NOT MBNA) for almost 5 years.

So what I don't understand is since Big Pharma provides so many jobs it's ok for your elected officials to support them. But in Delaware where the banking industry supports probably the same % of the population, if not more, with jobs then these companies are evil bastards.

Funny thing is, we can live without credit cards. I mean, I work for a credit card company and I only use my debit car - buy only what I can afford. Yet Pharma affects all of us because so many people in this country need the products they produce in order to survive and yet the pharma industry is sticking it to us with outrageous pricing (and don't get me started on the Autism & Vaccination shots. Those pharma lobbyists pay big bucks to have legisilation passed in order to require our children to have vaccination - it's free money for the pharma industry and quite possibly harming our children with Autism from those shots).

The only thing I can say is with the Bankerupcy Bill, the credit card industry has almost caught up to the evilness that is the Pharmaceutical industry. And btw, before working for a credit card company I did computer support at a major pharmaceutical company - I did tech support for their lobbyists

Well, I don't think of them as evil bastards, for one thing
I tend to be a little flip about saying I want to see them "protected" - they're a mixed bag (like many industries). The products improve lives. Friends have literally gotten their lives back because of new drugs to control rheumatoid arthritis, and friends with breast cancer are in remission due to chemo + radiation. I've taken PPIs that shut down acid production and fix painful gastric reflux, and the birth control that's available today is 100% better and safer then what was out there 25 years ago (in spite of lobbyists who would like to see BC development and coverage banned).

Pharma companies are developing new drugs against tremendous odds. DK the exact statistics, but for every drug that actually gets greenlighted by the FDA, hundreds died in infancy, or are shot down somewhere along the way. Any drug which DOES make it though has to carry the R&D costs of the hundreds which never make it.

Do they need to be watched over so abuses are curbed? Duh. I was delighted when the FDA finally came out with rules barring "gifts" (bribes) to physicians. And we shouldn't allow universities to become use taxpayer money to come up with breakthroughs that Pharmacos turn around and patent. And the list goes on. And the list goes on. Like every industry in this country (energy, homebuilding, finance/insur/credit, chemicals, etc.) they need to be overseen without being crippled. Obviously, this administration has let the oversight pendulum swing way too far towards "none".

I'm not involved with the lobbying side, so I don't see the worst of the industry. Most of the work I do is just checking with doctors and P&T committess to see that a drug under development will fill an actual need. The only instance of real "evil-doing" I've seen is when a(non-local) company was doing research to see if they should decrease their dose size because they were hearing that dialysis nurses were saving the leftovers from insured patients, and giving the combined dregs to those whose insurance didn't cover the drug. I managed to wriggle off that project, because I couldn't morally justify participating.

I only want a voice for peace and a voice for the common person (which means a voice against war and exploitation).

The Corporate Democrats don't offer that to me. They are just like Bush, but with a different name.

17. Let's Not Look At One Issue
Let's look at his overall record all his years in government.
I am not saying I support him or don't support him, just that we should be reasonable.

Personally, I don't like the idea of him giving up a relatively safe Senate seat since 2008 is when he is up for re-election.

22. In a democracy, you vote the way you feel. That's the ONLY way
You can't "compromise" on issues, because the entire population must vote for EXACTLY what it wants to get a representative democratic state.

1/2 the country compromising what they want to vote for kerry was disastrous. Even if he won, he wouldn't represent more than a small minority of our nation.

You MUST vote for exactly what you want. Everyone must. It's the only way to get a democracy. You can't just say : "Oh well, he's pretty close, might as well throw a vote his way..." That's retarded democracy.

52. If You Don't Compromise - Who Is Perfect?
Edited on Tue Jun-21-05 06:25 AM by iamjoy
Let's look at the 2004 crop of candidates, and tell me who would have been perfect from a traditional liberal point of view. I'll even discount vague things like charisma, leadership qualities and electability:

- Joe Lieberman
- Richard Gephardt
- John Edwards
- John Kerry
* All of the above voted for Iraq war

- Bob Graham: pro-death penalty
- Dennis Kucinich: weak record on reproductive freedom
- Howard Dean: pro-gun rights
- Wes Clark: part of the military mindset
- Carole Mosley-Braun: I confess to not knowing enough about her voting record
- Al Sharpton: not enough of a track record on several issues

48. Find this book and read it, it will tell you why not Biden:
"What it Takes" by Richard Ben Kramer.
Written in about 1990, about the 1988 elections when Biden ran in the primary. Wonderful book, full of insights about what it (used to) take to become President, and what it's like on the campaign.

Of course the book is a BIT out of date, now that Dubya OCCUPIES the White House- it takes half a brain and not much else. But time was, you had to be somehow special to become President of the U.S.
