"Missing" ribbon magnets - have you been seeing this?
For the last couple of weeks, I've been noticing cars (usually SUVs) with an "outline" of a ribbon on them. In other words, there was obviously one of those "Support the Troops/God Bless America" ribbon magnets on the vehicle, but it had been removed. That can't be a good sign for the Chimp-in-Chief.

Only kidding. Are you getting a chuckle that ribbons left a permanent mark on their expensive cars?

3. Yes!
Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 01:36 PM by BattyDem

It's funny because a couple of months ago, I remember reading an article in the local paper that said those ribbons can damage the car's finish if they're left on for a long period of time. Now I'm seeing expensive vehicles with invisible ribbons on them!

2. Mine got stolen
it was a peace/victory ribbon with one purple finger, because I support the Iraqi people.

But it got stolen this weekend. My brother's camo support the troops ribbon got ripped off about a month ago.

I kind of don't like that idea, since I believe we should support the troops regardless of the war.

4. The probem with most repugs
is they equate 'supporting the troops' with blindly supporting Bushco in everything they do. That's why I refuse to put a ribbon on my car. I think supporting the troops is trying to get them back home safely and helping ensure they have the proper equipment.

10. Some that I saw looked like a dirt outline ...
but others really looked like it was in the paint. It's hard to be sure because I see them on the cars in front of me while I'm driving, so I can't really study the marks.

If I saw a dirt outline on my car when I removed a magnet, I would clean it off. Why leave that gunky mess on your car?

That says "Got freedom, thank a Vet." It was a kind gesture. Me and my wife are the only vets on either side of the family and the only two liberals (save for my wonderful mother in law), go figure. However my brothers in law know better than to bring up bush or Iraq around me. It happened once in the past. All three of them have no problem defecating with their ripped assholes.

The magnet is proudly displayed on my beer refrigerator in the garage.

18. I don't know what the reason for the disappearance is ...
all I know is that for a couple of years I've seen SUVs and other pricey cars with "Support the Troops" and "God Bless America" ribbons and now I'm seeing the same kind of vehicles in the same area with nothing but ribbon outlines.

As MadisonProgressive said above, "The probem with most repugs is they equate 'supporting the troops' with blindly supporting Bushco in everything they do." (I've always felt the same way, which is why I never put a ribbon on my car, either.) So I can't help but wonder if those same repugs have turned against Bushco and removed the ribbons in anger. It just seems strange that the "ribbon outlines" started showing up all at once, within the last couple of weeks. Could the DSM be reaching the masses and pissing them off?

I saw an SUV today with a STT ribbon on it, but when I reached for my flyer and recruiting brochure, I noticed the driver was middle aged Vietnamese who I'd be willing to bet had literally supported our troops at one time.

So I left it alone.

Haven't seen another ribbon in weeks I think...

23. You know...
I have a real problem with alot of Du'ers that mock the "support our troops" ribbon.

What's the problem? For those of you who mock it, why do you feel the neeed to do so? There are alot of Libs who have those ribbons on their cars!

There are also alot of repubs who have them on their cars THAT DO NOT SUPPORT THE WAR. Including my Grandmother....whos' Grandson is in Iraq fighting this crappy war. She SUPPORTS her Grandson. She feels better by putting a ribbon on her car that states she is supporting the troops, she dosen't have to support the mission! WTF is wrong with that?

Sometimes DU really fucking scares me.... for a progressive board we sure do have alot of judgemental people on here.

31. Why is that ridiculous? It's an observation
Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 02:53 PM by BattyDem

If there are people mocking ribbons in other threads, then go complain over there. This thread was not intended to mock anyone or anything. I made an observation and was curious if other DUers were seeing the same thing in their area and if so, what they thought the reason for it was. That's all.

The problem with most repugs is they equate 'supporting the troops' with blindly supporting Bushco in everything they do."

The key word is "most" ... not all, but "most" - and there's no denying the fact in that statement. We've all seen how the repugs have hijacked our flag and made it synonymous with Bush. I chose not to display a ribbon for that reason. That's my choice. So what?

I getting tired of all these strawman arguments that have popped up lately. I post one thing and someone comes along, twists the facts to create a new argument and I end up defending comments I never made and intentions I never had!

I'm sorry if I offended you. That wasn't my intention. I just wanted to know what DUers thought about the disappearing ribbons. That's it.

38. Nobody is "twisting" anything.
It's a pretty consistent form of discussion on this board. Someone mentions something about the ribbons all of the time. What is the fascination with the support our troops ribbons?

I truly wasn't trying to high jack your thread with some inane banter about the ribbons. It just irks me that alot of DU equates the ribbons with being a bush/war supporter. This is simply not true. I just cannot understand why people have to be so damn jumpy and judgmental when it comes to to a ribbon on someones car!

The lack of humanity is what gets me.

If you choose not to place a ribbon on your car, so be it. Others have reasons for doing it...repuke/Dem or whatever.

I apologize for high jacking your thread, this certainly was not my intent.

32. I hate them . . .
. . . but not because of my lack of support for the troops (though parts of that are problematic enough.) No, the reason I hate them is because they imply that if you DON'T have a little sticker on your car, somehow you don't support them. It's a litmus test - put this on your car and we can trust you, don't put one on your car and . . . well, you MIGHT be OK.

I hate that shit.

33. I mock them
I admit. I even had a huge post a couple of weeks ago on the Greatest Page ranting about them, among other things.

I mock them because they're ridiculous. If you really want to support the troops, start by voting for people who don't cut their benefits, close their hospitals and send them off in unnecessary wars to die. Then, write your newspapers, your congressperson, your senator about the shoddy treatment our troops receive. Then, send a box of supplies or calling cards to the troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you're of age and support the war, enlist and give them what they really need - fire support.

9 times out of 10, I see the ribbons displayed proudly next to a W sticker of some sort. I do realize that not only fascists have these ribbons, but that doesn't make them any less ridiculous... just less offensive. They're a fashion statement, on par with a war souvenir. Made in China. Haven't seen a single one sold where the profits are going to HELP the troops or any cause for that matter. People are making a killing on these. Blood money, if you ask me. It's disrespectful.

So yes, I mock them. It's a fucking magnet for cripes sake.

If you or your grandma or your mother's uncle's cousin has one, then they should feel secure enough that my opinion shouldn't matter. If my opinion makes you or them feel guilty, then that's not my problem.

They're ridiculous. They're offensive. They're filling the pockets of war profiteers with blood money. They're meaningless. They're a fashion statement. They insult our troops by marginalizing them into meaningless propaganda symbols.

Grandma can have hers and so can anyone. But giving 3$ to China for a magnet that lasts 6 months is kind of silly. It does nothing for the troops and "most" of the people with them have done nothing besides vote for bush and love the war and decorate their gas guzzlers with them.

How do you know that most of the folks that have a ribbon on their car are repukes?

Are they REALLY made in China? Got anything link to support that? I've seen some folks that have made theirs up at cafe press, right here on DU.

What irks you so much about a fucking ribbon? If my grandmother feels better about it then why the fuck not?

45. Many are republicans that support the war
Their other bumper stickers usually give it away. For those that aren't, it's still a worthless fashion statement.

Motive only makes them marginally less offensive. You can dress it up with christmas lights or wear it on your forehead... you can be a fascist or a pacifist... it's STILL a freaking magnet.

All of the ribbons that are sold at mass-market retailers are Made In China. I think it's safe to say that more people acquired their ribbons from Walmart etc than from Cafe Press. None of the profits are going to any causes, troop-support or otherwise.

If it makes your republican grandmother feel good to put a magnet on her car and help to make a war profiteer rich, more power to her. I still find them ridiculous and offensive. She has the right to adorn her car with all the fashion statements she wants. I have the right to mock them incessantly.

89. All of the ones I have seen in MASS MARKET retaliers
are made in China. Yes, I look. And I have never heard differently until now.

But I don't care if they're made in Peru or Florida - does it really matter? The profits aren't going to anything meaningful and, well, they're still stupid.

I wish fewer people here would just make shit up and state it as fact.

So I take it that you have found a ribbon from Walmart or Kmart that wasn't made in China?

90. Yes, I did find a ribbon at Wal Mart that wasn't made in China.
You think they're stupid. Fine. I think they serve to remind the ignorant that we have soldiers dying right now.

I don't care if you haven't heard differently. My point stands. People should stop making shit up based on what they 'figure' or what they've seen.

92. Yeah, because it's totally unreasonable to assume
That every single one you've ever seen from a particular store (that makes damn near everything in China) was made in China and being that you've NEVER heard differently until the hearsay now... so I guess it was grossly irresponsible of me to state that VERY IMPORTANT AND RELEVANT observation. :sarcasm:

Where was it made? What cause was supported by the purchase?

Ribbon lovers are so defensive, I find that interesting. When I get sarcastic/critical comments about my bumper stickers, it cracks me up because I'm very secure in what the message says and what entity profited from my purchase.

Once again, I will say that if you like the ribbons have at it. Get 40 and drive around in a traveling Walmart ribbon mobile, it's your right. If you feel good about it, mine or any other opinions shouldn't matter. I would never steal or deface property of any sort and have never condoned that behavior.

59. It's not that I support them so much...
I don't even own one. However, I do know alot of people that do.

The ribbon provides THEM comfort. ( The people I know at least ) kinda like wearing a cross, or an aids ribbon. You are showing other people that you care... that you are thinking of the troops. Maybe not agreeing with the war, but agreeing that the troops need the Americans support.

What is so wrong with that? The anger, the elitist posts, the resentment....over a fucking magnet? WTF?

What would you say to the liberal that has the ribbon on their car? Would you mock them too?

61. I didn't really mean to mock anyone
I know some well meaning people have them attached to their cars. Maybe you should see the "MOST" in my comments. When you realize that they do nothing for the troops, the message kind of loses it's luster. Why not just send money to a Veterans organization or send care packages to soldiers?

63. How do you know that people with those stickers
aren't already doing that? ( sending money to vets orginizations etc.)

How do you know that I am not doing that?

Look... my Grandmother sends her grandson care packages and calling cards... not just to him, but to his whole group. She organized a deal with her bridge club where they send magazines, shower supplies, canned foods, camera's and paper. My grandfather was a WW11 vet... she supported him througout his tours and duty and still visits the local vet hospital. He passed on 7 years ago.

Myself? I also suppport the troops. Since my nephew is in, My husband and I send money and canned good all ofthe time. I have friends that are there... we send money, paper goods, letters...

And you know what? My grandmother just *happens* to have a support our troops magnent on her car, it has provided her comfort.

Too bad so many see it as a stupid useless "badge" or something that is wasteful. To her it isn't... to alot of DU'ers it isn't. Me included.

I am passionate about progressives being judgemental. Next thing you know, I am being called angry... or " This subject has pushed your buttons"

I am sorry if I have offended in this thread. This was not my intent.

I honestly wanted to find out why so many DU'ers judge others so quickly. I guess I have been judged too, because I care not about a yellow ribbon on my car or anybody elses. Oh well...Que' sara, sara.

Every persons situation is slightly different. I'm not any anti-ribbon crusader, just won't get one after what I've seen. I'm not even going to explain myself any further. Suffice it to say "to each their own". I can understand where your family may be touchy because of the family members involved in this war.

40. How many "W" stickers have
been torn off? At least one. My co-worker, who voted for Bush "because he'll keep us safe", tore his off after a costly trip to the gas pump. He kept seeing that photo of Bush walking hand in hand with Dubya. And it made him mad.
Not any of the other stuff...the lying about invading Iraq. The backpedaling on the environment. The kowtowing to corporate America. The failures to find Bin Laden, the anthrax killer, or the Plame informant.
No. The gas tank.
Bush will ultimately lose the NASCAR Dads at the gas tank. That's when it will finally sink in that the oil men own this country and this administration.

It saddens me a bit. I believe that a lot of those folks were legitimately supporting the troops, not just making empty "rah-rah, go, Bush!" gestures. Still, if they're conflicted enough about SOMETHING to actually take off the ribbons? Hey, critical thinking skills might have kicked in at last.

95. My boyfriends parents both had STT ribbons on the back of their
vehicles for several months before they took them off. I have no clue if they support Bush or not b/c they never talk about politics, but they have a niece in Iraq and I am HOPING they put them on to show their support for her and not for the war itself. Its kind of weird though that they took them off b/c I don't really see a reason for them to have done that unless they didn't want to be associated with being a Bush supporter. I still see several on my 2 mile drive to school everyday, doesn't look like many people have taken them off here in kansas.
I will admit that I am sometimes a bit judgemental when I see STT ribbons b/c of how pissed off i was when i found out that a lot of them are made in china and lots have W stickers on them too BUT I try to give people the benefit of the doubt that maybe they really do support the troops beyond putting a magnet on their car. I do see some that are Made in the USA, and a portion of the profits DOES go to the troops. I have no clue the percentage of ones made in China vs. USA but usu. the USA ones cost around $4.
