The 9/11 commission names him as the mastermind of 9/11, and I think they may be right about that (there is of course a lot more to that story). He has supposedly been in custody, at an undisclosed location, since his arrest by Pakistani police in March 2003.

Curiously, Pakistani police had initially reported that they killed him in September 2002.

He is Pakistani-Kuweiti.

Other reports, the day after his purported capture say Mohammed had escaped and was hiding in Pakistan, though his family was detained in the raid to get him. Other reports say he died in the latter part of October, 2002, in a police raid to capture him in Pakistan.
