Labor leader decries unemployment, working conditions in Iraq
By Sky Barsch Staff Writer
MONTPELIER – Iraqi Adnan A. Rashed is concerned that half his fellow citizens don't have jobs, oil workers recently had their wages slashed and traveling to work can be deadly. That's the way life is today in Iraq, according to Rashed. And things aren't getting any better.
"After occupation, basically everything has been destroyed in Iraq, including buildings, manufacturing … even the economy for Iraqis has been destroyed," Rashed said in a quiet room in a church as he prepared to address a group of Vermonters Saturday night. "Basically the destroying, or what happened, is a result of two things. One is Saddam, the regime. Number two, the occupation."
"Some of the other difficulties that Iraqi laborer or workers face in Iraq, because of the situation of the occupation involve, for example the danger that he faces once he leaves home, where often times he comes across a Humvee or a U.S. tank in which case he has to keep distance of 100 meters from the tank. If the worker for some reason does not pay attention to this, or the person in the car does not pay attention to this or for some reason falls within the 100 meters, of course we Iraqis know what the outcome of the situation is, which is obviously his death."
Rashed heads to Burlington today for a noontime rally and speech. He is traveling with Vermont Labor Against the War, which is comprised of the Vermont AFL-CIO, Washington/Orange County and Champlain Valley Central Labor Councils and the Vermont Workers Center. He has been speaking across the East Coast, while two other groups under the national Labor Against the War organization travel and speak in other parts of the country.
