Help me out with something regarding PNAC.
George H. W. Bush was one of the signing members of the PNAC, right? The same PNAC that declared that we would need a "catalyzing and catastrophic Pearl Harbor-type event" in order to justify an Iraq invasion?

Hold on a sec. Isn't George H. W. Bush the same guy who pulled up the reins on invading Baghdad to depose Saddam because it would have violated the "Powell Doctrine" (overwhelming force, clear objectives, clear exit strategy)? I wonder why this flip-flop-flip by the Republicans has not been examined more.

Bush didn't invade Iraq (when it would have likely been justified), but for some reason Clinton was obligated to do it five years later?

Shouldn't we be asking if Bush was wrong back in 1991? And if so, shouldn't we be (sarcastically) hammering him for allowing the situation evolve into this? This is all Bush Sr.'s fault!

1. IIRC senrior is NOT a founding member of PNAC
in fact he tried to hold them off as he believed Wolfie (for instance) was off his rocker. They actually had a very early version of PNAC adn Pre Emptive war in '92 in the NYT no less, and Chenney had to rein Wolfie in.

Now Jeb Bush is one of the original signatories, but not brother George

2. My theory- in 1991 we did have a "coalition"
and if we had gone in and taken Bagdad we wouldn't be able to run the country ourselves. Too many other nations would have wanted to have a say in what happens to the oil...er...country.

This new invasion...with it's (very small) coalition...gives us virtually all rights to the oil...I mean country.

3. Only Bush on any PNAC document
Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 06:47 PM by NoMoreMyths
is Jeb. But H.W. has his hands in the same pot as the rest of them, so it doesn't really make a difference.

H.W. told Wolfowitz to cool it back in 92ish, when Wolfowitz wrote the Defense Planning Guidence, which was basically the first writings of that particular group.

H.W. told the Shiites that we would help them overthrow Hussein, but then left them to be slaughtered.

6. Check out the signers of PNAC
You'll find several of them in key positions. Bolton's on there, too.

7. Bush 2.0 became a neocon on 9/12. It gave him a reason to exist.
Otherwise, he was getting pretty bored with the chain saw and word searches.

One good reason to have a pres who chases skirt is it gives them something to do so they stay out of trouble.
