Flag burning question...

suppose I make my own flag with slightly different colors -- maybe orange, white and purple. Can I burn that?


Frankly, I wouldn't burn a flag. I have proudly carried the flag at protest rallies. I also really like the washing of the flag as a means of protest, though I have not done that.

1. The Amendment says the Congress would have the authority to pass

laws regarding the flag of the united states. I assume your homemade flag would be exempt since it would not be a true depiction of the US Flag. I guess though it would depend what law they passed. They could make a law that says it is illegal to make your US FLag with the wrong colors.

First, to state the American flag is protected, then, to state that any flag that resembles the American flag is protected. What a nightmare!

2. With flag burning

it's also the only proper way to dispose of the flag. You should never throw it away. Also according to the rules of how to properly treat a flag you shouldn't wear it on tshirts, bandana's, those beanie bear's etc. And no way you should ever write on it, so Bush should go to jail for writing on the actual flag and not the stick. But if you were to color the flag that would be a BIG no-no and against the flag rules. I know I know too much about this. I was interested in why the big fuss over flag burning and decided to do research and a lot of the big fuss is from ignorance.

...where does it end? What would happen if this amendment passes and 1000 people stand down the street from the Capitol and burn 1000 flag posters--paper representations of the flag?

Is that illegal?

What if a flag's on TV and you break the TV with a sledgehammer (somehow I see this in a performance art setting, if you know what I mean).

It'll probably encourage people to get creative and screw with the concept of the flag even more.

It sure made MY brain start snapping out ideas in an instant.

13. The way to contest it is to say you don't pass amendments...

...just because something offends you personally.

Or, you don't pass amendments to take freedoms away (it has only been done during Prohibition).

Local authorities could interpret desecration anyway they want (until legally challenged - and who's gonna enjoy paying those court costs?)

Using existing laws should cover burning the flag in most areas - i.e. "you got a permit to start a fire in a public place?" *Kinda like the defenders of the 2nd - just enforce existing gun laws - stop making new ones.
