This flag is an historical symbol, like it or not, and I don't get offended when someone burns any flag because IT'S JUST A SYMBOL. But I DO get offended at Sherman, who burned people and their homes - not everyone in the South supported slavery. In fact, MOST fought for states rights and didn't even fucking OWN slaves.

It's called civility. But there seems to be a big difference between that term and "southern hospitality." Offering someone a mint julep and being polite doesn't make up for the murders, lynchings, rapes, beatings, and other degradations committed by your forebears.

How about a simple, "Jeeez, they were wrong. And as one of their descendants, I apologize." That would go a lot further than so-called "southern pride and outrage."

While you're at it, how about explaining why 15 southern senators were against apologizing for lynchings. And pleeeeez, spare us "the flag was just a symbol" explanation.

39. I drove from Boston to Miami and back without a problem

Observations:

1) The only ones who gave me the finger were all people with New York plates. Even in Georgia.

2) Conservative Southerners should stop trying to ban porn and ban NASCAR instead. 3/4 of the people down there drive like they WANT to cause an accident. There are little wreaths and crosses aplenty along the highway to prove it.

3) Everyone I met was very nice unless they were driving. My god, the speed limit was 75 and nobody was doing under 90!

4) The "laid-back South" I keep hearing about (even from Southerners) is a myth. Whatever time may be spent being "laid-back" is made up for on the highway.

5) There were condom machines in every bathroom. That could explain why they're in such a hurry to get where ever they're driving.

6) Northerners are rude to them. At one restaurant, the waitress complained that "some yankees" at one of her tables asked her about cow-tipping. I suggested that she "touch their food."

7) There isn't anyplace that is marked "No Smoking."

8) Gas stations are a good place to sell fireworks.

In short, the majority of Southerners seem to be Okay when they're on foot.

burn the flag. the rebel flag, that is. hit garage sales, flea markets, pawn shops, and anywhere else this symbol of oppression, racism and bigotry can be found. buy them and do a slow barbeque of them at rallies, marches and gatherings for everyone to see. additionally, print out 8.5" X 11" images of the rebel flag on your printer, tape a book of matches to each one (preferably the matchbook with the picture of lincoln's face on it) and hand them out to people at rallies and marches and encourage them to burn them for the crowd to enjoy as well. best of all, watch freeper heads explode right before your very eyes!

if this turns into a big craze, wouldn't it be great to see the filthy, redneck, republican legislators try to amend the constitution to ban burning the stars and bars?
