How does * get such control over the corporate media ?
Does anyone know of any open or veiled threats to them ? Someone who works in the media ? Or is it that the Bushco agenda dovetails with their own ? Thanks in advance.

2. Backwards.
The question should be, "How did the corporate media get such control over Bush?"

The Corporations are pulling the strings here.

4. I think it is all about access.
Piss off the WH, no interviews, no info...nothing. Then all we are stuck with is Jennifer Willbanks, that Utah Boy Scout and the Aruba Chick.

5. A lot of it is through denial of access if you are perceived "unfriendly"
as well as outright intimidation ("watch what you say, watch what you do"). Most of this work was done early in shrub's first term and you see the effect now.

Of course, the news outlets COULD actually have courage and say, you know what? We don't need this, we're going to ask real questions, and if the WH wants to boot us out and fill the press corps with Talon News and expose themselves that way, fine.

But of course they don't have the courage to do this.

There is a longer and more complicated answer to your question, which is that the Republicans have had a strategy to control and coopt the media dating back since Nixon, which has been decades long in the making. Key steps in this include the elimination of the fairness doctrine and the creation of FOX news.

16. I first heard of "denial of access" during the Reagan administration
Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 09:52 AM by Lydia Leftcoast
Now if the owners of media had actually had GUTS instead of a burning desire to be included in the A-List cocktail parties, they would have instructed their reporters to say, "We wanted to interview the president, but he denied us because we refuse to kiss his ass."

But I suppose that in real life, all the corporate sponsors would have withdrawn their commercials from any such media outlet.

7. Using taxpayer assests to bribes them just like ..
he does with the churches. They do his bidding and the FCC and justice department and congress will look away as they violate anti-trust and consolidation rules. If they expose what he is really doing, the FCC, justice department and congress will crack down on them. Simple.

8. I agree with 3, 4, and 5
It is a system of money(bribes), access, and intimidation. Of course wealthy republicans are more than happy to create newspapers and television news that will outright lie to support the regime.

9. Reagan, and later Clinton, deregulated the media. Reagan did away with
the Fairness Doctrine. Now 6 uber rich ultraconservative Republicans own all the media in the US, except for a handful of Mon and Pop outlets.

10. All of the above
Money, threats, bribes, deals, common viewpoint, greed ...

Of course, there are little things that reinforce the "loyalty", like
getting the son of your (1st term) Secretary of State as FCC chairman,
anthrax letters to editors who published "unwelcome" stories/photos,
advertising revenues being under the control of the major players ...

See? There's nothing unethical or immoral about lying for the government
when you consider the alternative ...

11. Good question
Here's an article from makethemaccountable about corporate media ownership:

http://www.makethemaccountable.com/podvin/media/040627_MaximizingShareholderValue.htm

Podvin wrote a more specific story (which I think is linked to in this piece) about how "Neutron" Jack Welch, having already turned NBC News into a corporate cheerleading squad, made a deal with Karl Rove to promote Incurious George in exchange for FCC deregulation of NBC's media properties. It's one of the most horrible stories I know.

12. That was very informative! Long article but worth reading.
And I thought when we get fair voting/paper receits...we could win!
Looks like we'll need to make a deal with Corp Media first.

15. Read the Forward in RFK Jr.'s new book....
he along with David Brock explain quite well how the USA media is controled by a RW propaganda machine with direction from the WH. It is fascinating and very disturbing with Grover Norquist at the helm!

:scared:
