I saw a spokesman for CPB on the news today
and he says "the funding cuts will directly impact Sesame Street and stations in rural areas will be hit first" I can't even watch the debate on this today, imagine cutting funds to a program that has helped so many children from so many walks of life, it's heartbreaking.

Feds to cut funds for USVI Public Radio Station
by Susan Mann
Caribbean Net News Correspondent
Tuesday, June 21, 2005

ST THOMAS, USVI: The more than 120,000 households, throughout the USVI, parts of Tortola and Puerto Rico that listen to National Public Radio, could experience a drastic reduction of news programming from the US mainland, if the federal government cuts funding to a local affiliate of National Public Radio.

The fledgling station, WVGN 107.3, along with other local NPR stations across America are on notice, while Congress decides on whether to finalize a 45 percent cut in funding for public broadcasting.

While NPR, a non-profit, news and programming service has been in existence for about 30 years, the US Virgin Islands station has been on the air for only three years. Patricia Bourne, WVGN Programming Director, told Caribbean Net News, that, "while the station's local programming is not dependent on federal funding, the national and international news programs it receives for the USVI public is."

...snip...

The funding reduction also includes deep cuts for the local public television station, WVTX. The Ready to Learn program, which supports educational and commercial-free children's programming would be completely eliminated.

3. Oh get over it,
Halliburton needs the money! :sarcasm:

Why don't we just cut ALL programs & send the money to Iraq where it disappears into a black hole & magically reappears in Halliburton accounts.

I am sick of this whole mess called America.

4. I wonder if contributions to the stations
could keep them going, so they can tell the government to screw off?

5. I'm not sure but 16% of their budget comes from the govn.
and the way the guy explained it was that the govn money is seed money and private and corporate donations are based on that, 16% seems to keep tings running and donations pay for programming---i think.

6. so that makes 84% non-governmental donations
I say to hell with them, we'll make up the difference and they can keep their scummy little hands out of it....with only 16% contribution, they shouldn't have any say about anything, it's hardly a majority amount.
