cspan3: Byrd gives Rummy a dressing-down
Talking about Iraq:
First he noted that he had been there longer than Rummy, pulling rank. Then he said he didn't think he'd ever seen a Sec-Def who liked to lecture as much as he did.
They had been scolding a "certain senator" who had spoken out recently (meaning Durbin). Byrd said, "there have been a lot of careless statements by you, too, Mr. Secretary..." and when they ask him legitimate questions in committee, "...we get a sneer from you when you come up here".
"We (the Senate) didn't ask enough questions going into this war..so we're asking questions now. The American people haven't heard enough of the truth...I've just heard enough of your "smart" answers...get off your high-horse when you come in here."

You tell him, Senator Byrd!

5. To coin a phrase: "FUCKIN' A!"
Right on Senator, it's about time you guys had enough of his bullshit and began calling him and his boss the failures they are!

Rummy should be sweating his ass off and shaking in his boots every time he's called up to appear. Casually mention "The Hague" every day before he's scheduled to appear!

And I'll say it again, loudly!

FUCKIN' A!

:D

Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va.: "Mr. Secretary, I've watched you with a considerable amount of amusement. ... I've been here a long time, longer than you have. ... I've seen a lot of secretaries of defense. ... I don't think I've ever heard a secretary of defense who likes to lecture the committee as much as you. ...

"You may not like our questions but we represent the people. ... We ask the questions that the people ask of us whether you like it or not. ... The problem is we didn't ask enough questions at the beginning of this war that we got into, Mr. Bush's war. ...

"I don't mean to be discourteous. I've just heard enough of your smart answers to these people here who are elected. ... So get off your high horse when you come up here."

6. Byrd for hero!
(It was however just a little bit ironic Byrd lectured Rumsfeld about giving lectures. I think I will let this one pass!)

7. Hooha!!!
Byrd is my hero. A true champion of America. 20 years ago I never thought the day would come when I'd think this highly of him. He makes the spineless on both sides of politics squirm and glance around.

HOOHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ted Kennedy wasn't bad today, either. I caught that exchange.

Hold their feet to the fire, gentlemen, the truth will set us free.

8. Durbin's apology was the first day of the Democratic Reconquista
"We (the Senate) didn't ask enough questions going into this war..so we're asking questions now. The American people haven't heard enough of the truth...I've just heard enough of your "smart" answers...get off your high-horse when you come in here.""

10. "Get off your high horse."
OMG....it needed to be said and who better to say it?! Thank you Senator Byrd!

I know how the repukes "think" about Byrd. In Paul O'Neil's book, he told of when he had to go before the committee for his confirmation, he was told by the WH to "just sit there and listen to Byrd. He likes to go on about things...just sit and listen and don't pay any attention to what he says." (that's paraphrased) and O'Neil ended up getting into a war of words about growing up poor. Remember that? Byrd washed the floor with him and O'Neil lost that fight. I suggest Rummy keep his fucking mouth shut.
