Question re. the Flag burning/Desecration amendment -
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 02:38 AM by Pachamama
:patriot:

Do DUers know if there is any other nation in the world that bans desecration of its flag and if so, which nations and to what extent of the law does it go and to what punishment? I know the nazis made it against the law to desecrate the nazi emblem and flag...oh, but thats right, we aren't allowed to make such comparisons...

I'm so disgusted...Not that it has ever crossed my mind to burn a US flag, but the idea of such a law infringing on any 1st amendment rights is making me pissed. The Repukes just want to divide this country further and make Dems look like unpatriotic flag burners....

Anyone know the answer to this question? :hi:

PS: Did a quick google and here's another question:

What do countries like China, North Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Iran, and Cuba all have in common? If one answered that all these countries are flagrant violators of human rights, that would be correct. If one answered that all these countries have been models of oppressive and totalitarian governments, that too, would be correct. What is lesser known is that all these countries also have laws against flag burning!

Coincidink? :eyes:

Interesting if these are the only countries that have such laws....I did see that Poland has such a law too, apparentely a hold over from Communist days....but I'm willing to put money on the fact that all the countries that have such laws either have dictatorships, oppressive regimes or are communist or former communist nations...

Great...just the path we want to be going down....

3. wikipedia article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_desecration

Lists Hong Kong as having a flag desecration law it enforces; mentions Australian and New Zealand court decisions backing it as freedom of expression.

4. I put it in the same line as building all these sites to war/dead
They are springing up every place. I should spend some time reading about all this but it seems to me that we have more of them than ever and it makes me wonder why? Also when other empires put up theirs. The battle flag goes with it as it meant something. Where the company was on the battle field. Now is that what our flag means? War or does it just stand for what we think? Will we be able to burn the bill of rights? You see abstract thoughts do not burn even when you makes laws. It may be put into law but I will take bet on more flags being burn if they do. The govt. has then put it in law it stands for our beliefs so it will be aimed at when people wish to say the laws are wrong.
