10. Same here
I like DVDs and still buy VHS movies, too. I found Shrek 2 and Sharktales for under 3 bucks at the store. Gave them to my grandkids.

11. I rent them once in a while because I get tired of renting
scratched or smudged disks.

5. VHS is a dinosaur. DVD recorders are going to replace your VHS
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 01:03 PM by LibInTexas
machine, the prices are starting to come down.

Then you can transfer the VHS to DVD and ditch those tapes.

20. I tried to dub my VHS tapes but...
was unable to because they are copywrited. Damn. I don't want to buy DVD versions of the same thing. Why can't I make a copy for my own use?

8. Yeah, it's very time consuming. You have to do it in real time.
I've had a DVD recorder for a couple of years (my business is video production and I need to make DVD's now and then), and I've only converted a small percentage of my old personal tapes. It just takes so much time.

12. I'm surprised it took this long.
It's been a good four or five years since the video stores moved all the VHS out of the way for the DVDs.

13. Hmm. Didn't know they still sold VHS tapes. Never darken their door.
Good idea about transfering everything to disks.

16. You'll need a DVD recorder.
Of which there are several good options; Panasonic, Phillips, Pioneer.

There are a range of prices, some have a back-up hard drive, some have a VHS/DVD combo so you can straight dub he tape to the DVD without having to patch another machine in.

It all depends on how much you want to spend. A google search, sometime when you don't have anything better to do, is probably the best way to go.

And I wasn't sure if it was necessary to have a combo unit or not. :)

15. What is the best VHS/DVD recorder? I want to convert my VHS
tapes to DVD and I am not up to date on the best brand to buy. If anyone has a suggestion, I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks!

17. Personally, I'm very happy with my Panasonic.
It's DVD RAM (and I'll not even get into the differences in formats). You can also record off the air or cable and reuse the RAM RW discs over and over.

To copy something just once, the cheaper -R are what one uses. Then make sure you FINALIZE it to make it viewable on other machines.

I don't want to go into this too deeply, googling around for a few hours will get you up to speed.
