4. My son is only 8 so someone once gave me a load of grief for
expressing concern about a draft. I couldn't believe I had to remind a 55 year old how long the Vietnam War lasted.

9. I would worry too.
This could go on for a long time and if we do not get rid of these people we will be going all over the world for a long time to come. My boys are 19 and 21 so I am worried for now but you should never catch grief for worrying about your little one.

5. This is the case to watch
http://www.jeremyhinzman.net/

Canada will decide (apparently) in December whether to harbor deserters and draft dodgers this time.

Aside from that, yes, there are many here who would hide and help them. Help them get to a 3rd country if necessary - In the end this is a big, big country (bigger than the US) and lots of room to hide, your boy will be safe here :hide: but as to whether they will officially be allowed, be able to claim residency, get legitimate jobs etc. watch the case above.

12. If Canada does not help.....
they are as complicit as the US in the war crimes being commited. This comes from a former Newfoundlander and someone who still has relatives up there.

Of course, I am quite lucky....I still have a SIN number and as far as they know, I am still a citizen of Canada.

14. Go easy demgurl
If you're from here then you know good and well that Canadians will help, as to whether Canada (as in the federal government will officially help that's another issue ) but take a quick poll of your friends and family up here and you'll have your answer.

6. I will not assist Young Republican chickenhawks
In fact, I would call the authorities to come and pick them up.

I only help Kerry voters. People who were eligible to vote and did not, or who voted for Nader, are objectivley the equivalent of Bush voters as far as I am concerned.*

*Of course, people too young to vote in 2004 are not included in this characterization.

10. I understand why you feel that way
but I wouldn't include Nader voters. Their only real crime was being too idealistic, they did vote and they voted against the war.

8. Yes!
And I am betting we would have a new equivalent of The Weather Underground, too. Not that I support bombing recruiting stations and such, but I see it as inevitable given the amount of hatred towards this government.

11. Not getting my nephew either for this bullshit.
I read on DU ... oh a week or so ago a post stating that there was already a Conscious Objector underground railroad in existence to Canada. For those enlisted. Sorry don't have a link, maybe some else does. Peace. :)

13. I don't know how strong the underground railroad is here
And as I said above this is the case to watch

http://www.jeremyhinzman.net /

But unofficially, yes, they will be safe here - even if we then have to sneak them into a 3rd country. Canada's got your back on this - especially in a draft situation.

It's a "Blue" country =) and it's a country of refugees - ever since the American revolution our population has gone up anytime there was a crisis anywhere in the world...it's what we do - well that, peacekeeping and ... well, beer

15. One bit of advice
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 01:34 PM by justinsb
If the draft starts don't wait. They can stay here up to 6 months, officially, as a visitor. They are more likely to make it across the border if you don't wait until they are a fugitive. Once they are here, have them get in touch with the Unitarian church or the quakers, both are pacifist and extremely opposed to the war.

20. We're going to leave the country.
That's already been decided. If the draft comes, we're OUTTA here.

We really would need an underground railroad to hide all the kids. We would have a Democratic ONLY Underground Railroad and the repukes can fend for themselves.

Maybe the underground railroad could go to where we're going??? ;) I'm willing to hide kids from having to be killed. ANYTIME! I'd take 'em all if I could.

If this is a possibility, it should be in the planning stages and NOT via the internet....if you get my drift?

21. As I said above
don't wait. If the draft starts - go. You can 'visit' canada for 6 months - that's a long time to figure out next steps and there will be no need to hide if you don't wait until the kids are fugitives.

25. Thank you, Justin, but we aren't going to Canada.
My son is only 12. We will leave as soon as the Draft is announced and we'll be LONG gone by the time he's 18.

It's good to know we can go to Canada for 6 months though! Thank you!

as a side note...

I am MORE THAN WILLING to hide any DUer's kids, anytime. If this is ever in the works...let me know through PM and I'll put my name on a list for harboring anyone who wants to hide from these warmongers.

24. Yes, and I'll help however I can.
The only conservatives I'd help would be sincerely reformed conservatives. If they support the war and just don't want to fight it, too damn bad, they're going.

28. I think there should be one.
My roommate and I hid her boyfriend back in the Vietnam days. He was a marine and when he was told they were about to be shipped to Nam the next day, he deserted and showed up at our doorstep.

We kept him until he was able to get amnesty in Canada. He was lucky though. After the war, it turned out there was no record of him because they got lost or blown up in Nam or something crazy like that.

I have never regretted it.

Political suicide, plain and simple. The GOP will not slit their own throats for George W. Bush.

On the very slim chance that it is implemented, it serves as the catalyst for revolution. There will be "underground" everything. And the efforts will most certainly not be as harmless as bunch of political neophytes bitching, on what is the equivalent of an online water cooler.
