Proof the Republican Economy hurts people
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 05:24 PM by DanCa
Forgive me this one is rough and am kinda emotionaly down right now but am going to be brutal honestly. Today I got a call from the day care center about a good friend of mine Nancy B. Aparently I was on her emergency contacts list. They day care center asked me to look after the kids until her sister got home from work. I said okay but i am getting ahead of myself right now.

I know Nancy from church - she's on the bishop council with me- she's a good person who has these two beautiful children and her husband enlisted in the Iraq war about two years ago. I never talked politics with Nancy but she was quick to put anyone in her place who ever insulted a president be it a republican or a democrat. Respect the office not the man if thats what it takes. Thats about as far as our political discussions go.

Anyhow I got a call from the center saying that she collapsed from exhuastion and was taken to the hospital. It turns out Nancy - bless her heart - held two full time minimum wage jobs since the time her husband enlisted. She never complained either at least two me about her lot.

Now I have a question for all you people that think the economy is wonderful. How can I look into her scared kids eyes - because they know her mom's in ICU- and say the economy is improving. Please give me an intelligent answer I want to know. And again please excuse the choppiness of the letter I am very angry and hurt that I have to visit a friend in the hospital because we havent had a minimum wage increase in x many years.

1. If you posted her real name, please edit it out
because some of the people on this board are Freepers and some are just plain not too stable.

As for those children, why not tell them the truth? Bad men are taking all the money and leaving the rest of us to fight over the little that's left over and their mom just got tired of fighting and couldn't go on until she got some rest in the hospital.

Even a two year old has had experience with a kid who tries to hog all the toys at a play session. They understand selfishness better than you think they do.

2. .
It could be that the economy is good for some, just not for her (and probably many more)...

3. Please remove the real name. Real names=NOT GOOD.
I hope that your friend gets the support and help that she needs.

Its really sad that military families should be in this situation.

I don't think too many people here at DU think the economy is improving. I just got offered a permanent position in my field this week after not having one for over 4 years. During part of that time the only work I could find was working part time at a convenience store. It was dangerous, tiring, low paying work- yet everyone in the neighborhood told me how lucky I was to have this job. That's how many people were unemployed.

Contrary to what some people think, convenience stores seldom need to hire teenagers, as there are so many responsibile adults willing to take it on as a second job. Virtually every single person at that store had it as a second job, and when they had paid vacation time from one job, they used the time to pick up more hours at the other job.

The economy stinks.

5. Forget about the economy...
you just need to tell the kids that mommy is going to be okay.

I would be more mad at her husband for leaving his family on some foolhearty patriotic mission. His priorities are screwed up if he actually volunteered for the war and he's a selfish son-of-a-bitch for going.

Take care. Perhaps now your church needs to help financially assist your friend. The war might hit home a little harder for the congregation that way.

8. I would definitely keep your opinion separate
from what you're telling her small children. This is neither the time, nor the place, and the children are too young. And it would be extremely inappropriate. I would use generalities, like mommy isn't feeling well and there are some excellent doctors taking care of her so she can come home to you soon.

Your real talk is with your friend, not about politics, but about how you are there for her, no matter what the differences in your politics.

Good luck to you, you sound like a great friend to have.

And I hope it goes without saying that attacking her husband would be a horrific thing to do and I don't think most friendships could survive such an intrusion.

9. oh I agree with you all
I wasnt planning on talking about politics with her kids. They got enough troubles right now without me adding to it. My question was aimmed more at less as to the people who are saying that this economy is great and how that "they" would explain to the kids if this economy is good where is thier mom in a hospital room.
Fyi the kids are fine right now watching the superman season one dvd. I am sorry for the confusion of my original question.
