100-year-old in copter crash dies

Friday, June 24, 2005; Posted: 2:13 p.m. EDT (18:13 GMT)

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- A Swedish man who was injured in a helicopter crash on his 100th birthday has died, a hospital statement said Friday. Carl Zetterlund had been treated at Uppsala University Hospital since Tuesday when the helicopter crashed shortly after takeoff from a nursing home in Heby, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) northwest Stockholm.

At the time of the crash, police said his injuries were not serious, and he was admitted to the hospital in stable condition. But his condition worsened and he died early Friday, the hospital said in a brief statement.

Zetterlund had been supposed to celebrate his birthday with a helicopter ride to the Stockholm archipelago together with his son, grandson and 7-year-old great-grandson, police said. But the helicopter crashed after its rotor blades clipped a tree and a lamp post as it was taking off.

Zetterlund's family members, the pilot and a nursing home worker on board, were not seriously injured and left the hospital on Wednesday, news agency TT reported. Prosecutors have launched an investigation into the crash.

2. Way To Go
My ambition was to be 95 and shot in bed by a jealous husband, but this one works just as well.

To be that age and still have plans and ambitions and look to the future...definitely the way to go.

Cheers Mr. Zetterlund!

6. But it kinda sucks that the helicopter crashed on lift off, it would...
...have been nice if he had at least had his helicopter ride first, and maybe crash on landing. :evilfrown:

5. Kinda like that Alanis Morrissette song "Ironic."
"An old man turned 98
he won the lottery and died the next day"
