When the UN says NO, when will the draft follow?

*'s arrogant diatribe before the UN today will not be received well by member state who will not want to get involved in the mess that this little twit has cooked up. They will likely not send any more than a token number of troops, which US taxpayers still may have to pay for (maybe Germany could bring back the Hessians? :)).

According to the New York Times earlier this week, the US military made its recruting goals this year--or so it was reported. Many National Guardspeople will not re-enlist and morale is not good among the soldiers deployed in Iraq. I'm figuring that if former Texas Governor George W. Bush is elected president in 2004 his Administration will propose bringing back the draft in 2005. Certainly Karl Rove will position the Administration to say a draft is unnecessay during the campaign: heaven forbid the dingbat "security Moms" out there should have to see little Dylan off to fight in the wars that they so cheerfully applaud. But after the election, all bets will be off because * will not have to stand for re-election again. Congress would likely rubber stamp it early in 2005, well before their next election. Also, don't think that a draft crafted by a Republican Administration will be egalitarian either. They will see to it that the sons of the privileged can find creative ways to evade service. They will also exempt women at the request of the religious right (who never much liked the idea of women in the armed forces period). The stakes are very high in next year's election, especially if you have children of draft age.

It will give good motivation for those of us who ARE of draft age to get going on the campaigning. I doubt that I would be able to get a college deferment under a GOP-inspired draft, and I think that speaks for anyone who lacks to money to go to an Ivy League school.

3. I fully expected the new Selective Service bill to start moving out

of committee and toward a vote right after the 2002 elections. Now we're in Iraq, still in Afghanistan, still in Kosovo, etc., and I can't imagine that recruitment will fill the military's needs for long, particularly not with Bush* cutting pay for troops in Iraq and cutting veterans' benefits. Hide your sons.

Or perhaps they will simply order everyone in the military to vote for Bush and be done with it.

For now, the recruiters are able to make their goals easily because so many young folks have no choice but to enter the service to make a living...
