Ben Stein is a loony hack!
I was so amazed at the obscene twist of logic on his opinion piece on CBS Sunday Morning. Arrrggghhhh!!!

He actually tried to equate what the religious right is doing today with what MLK and the clergy were doing during the civil rights and Vietnam eras. It prompted a very angry email from me that these people were actually fighting for rights and equality and not against them. Ended with a thank God there are clergy and people of faith that still know the difference and are working against the hate-filled agenda of the right.

3. I don't know how they work these things
amongst themselves it was labeled and introduced as an opinion piece. It was just him spewing his illogical screed.

a few weeks ago doing a closing segment so I think he's a paid commentator.

11. He was basically saying that
he saw no reason for everyone to be so up in arms about the seperation of church and state in this current environment because MLK and the clergy were leaders in the civil rights and anti-Vietnam war movements and no one had a problem with that.

It makes no difference to him apparently that the religious right is actually trying to deny rights to a significant portion of the population--gays and women--and that they are bound in an effort to stifle dissent rather than trying to win rights, equality, and to stop senseless slaughter in an illegal war.

If he can't see the glaring difference...comparing the two are obscene!

MLK was for tolerance. They are for intolerance.

MLK respected people of other religions. They do not.

To compare them is ludicrous.

15. What he also failed to mention
was that MLK, and William Sloan Coffin, were not acting as political leaders- they were acting to MOTIVATE political leaders- against WAR and opression, not in promotion of it-

What an asshole Stien showed himself to be-

Had MLK not been assisinated (and i feel strongly this was the us govt's actions) he would likely have STOOD TRIAL for 'aiding and abeting' those who refused the draft.

Stien says, no one was incensed back then- he either smoked too much weed, or not enough, cause his memory is very flawed-

i don't like him, his humor (?) i find nothing he says funny-
or his monotone delivery of his stupitidy something worth waisting oxygen on.

some wonderful quotes from WSCoffin that show the hyprocricy of Stiens remarks-

(After 9/11): The U.S. government should have vowed "to see justice done, but by the force of law only, never by the law of force."

"The world is too dangerous for anything but truth and too small for anything but love."

16. MLK wasn't about "faith based intiiatives" - govt spending on churches
George W. is corrupting churches with faith-based initiatives money; buying their support or at least silence.

Of course, that money is OUR money.

18. good point... and
MLK was on the 'front lines' getting beaten, jailed, and harassed by the 'government'-

and ultimately killed- for what he believed in. there is NO comparison to be made- lets see any 'religious right republicans' even work up a sweat, march, or .... allow debate...??? for what they claim to believe.

for highlighting Bob Geldolf and the plight of poverty in Africa he has been fighting. I told him it reminded me to order my new Heifer Intl. catalog so my family could donate to them for my birthday.

20. Wanna know how loony Ben Whine REALLY is?
Edited on Sun Jun-26-05 01:35 PM by onager
See if you can rent the Eighties TV mini-series, "Amerika."

Ben Whine came up with the "concept" and wrote the plot outline. I'm sure he really wanted to write the script, but since all Ben Whine scripts apparently come out like they were written with a Bic clamped between his butt-cheeks, no one would let him.

Anyway, "Amerika" was loaded with every insane far-right idea for the last 70 years. The UN takes over America, aided by those evil, scheming liberal...schoolteachers! We fall to a One-World Government, with only a few patriotic gun-owning 'Murikans willing to fight!

It was a sort of even LESS entertaining "Red Dawn," stretched out to several hours.

I guess that's why MLK was harrassed by the FBI, then assassinated.

24. and WSCoffin, Dr. Spock, and others
who excape my memory were arrested and charged and found guilty for aiding those who attempted to avoid the draft.

Sure, no one had a 'problem'- much

RFK had a REAL problem with the unfairness he was witnessing, and i believe he would have acted on his beliefs had he not also been killed.
