NYT - Take That, Evil! In Queens Park, a Superhero Prevails
A sidebar story about yesterday's Billy Graham crusade:

But yesterday morning, the park belonged to Bibleman, dauntless star of television, DVD and video games who guards the Biblecave, vanquishes Satan's messengers and quotes Scripture like there's a heck of a tomorrow. Hours before Mr. Graham was to take the stage, several thousand cheering children and fan-waving parents braved the scorching sun to catch a rare New York performance of "Bibleman Live: A Fight of Faith."

The plot of the show, not surprisingly, is not long on surprises. Bibleman's archenemy, Wacky Protestor, has hatched an invention called A.R.T., for Animated Reconstructive Transport, "an animated world where there are no churches, no Bibles, no faith, and best of all ... no God!" Wacky enlists the aid of Rapscallion to make it happen. Bibleman has other ideas.

I have no problem with churches tailoring their message to the age and interest of their audience, but I'm troubled that the implied message here is, protesting religious intrusions into civil society is evil, and if you're not one of the "good guys", you want all churches, bibles, etc. eliminated. Promoting fear of those who don't believe what you do isn't healthy for our future.

2. There is no happy middle ground
You either believe what they tell you to believe, or you or are EVIL. I know, I was raised by fundies.

3. *LOL*
My daughter picked up a videotape called "Bibleman meets Gossip Queen" in a thrift store (her favorite place to shop other than American Apparel). We haven't watched it yet, but judging from the blurb on the cover, it promises to be hysterical.

5. Silencing the Gossip Queen
The mouthy and menacing Gossip Queen sets her sights on a group of innocent kids and Bibleman has his hands full battling her thugs and fending offer her bitterness beams. But drawing his strength from the Bible and wielding the Sword of the Spirit, Bibleman ultimately mutes his evil adversary in the exciting finale.

13. I dunno.
I always sort of lumped gossip under the "thou shalt not bear false witness" one, since most gossip of the petty, vicious type is also at least partly false.

I hate gossip and despise gossipers, so I'm not denigrating any effort against it, but the video itself was a hoot. I can just imagine how funny the others in the series are, "Bibleman" costumes and all.

:D

4. what a loon
He asked them to pray: "Dear Jesus, I think you're really cool, and I want you to be my best friend. So I admit that I have sinned, and I ask you to forgive my sins."

Funny, I bet none of these kids' non-imaginary friends put that kind of a condition on their relationship. "Hey Jimmy, I'll be your friend if you confess all your sins!"

12. Have to have something else to look at
Edited on Sun Jun-26-05 01:30 PM by brainshrub
Your right! You have to have something to look at while you're getting off to this RW Christian power-fantasy. Looking to long at BibleMan, with his long and powerful sword, might turn the youngsters gay.

The next BibleMan nemesis should be the "Oh my gay stars" duck. (I wish I had that graphic handy right now.)

8. Found a lot of info here;
http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2005/06/bibleman_is_com.html

All of Bibleman's enemies are non-Christian...
Or rather, all non-Christians are Bibleman's enemies.

Could this really catch on?
What a despotic meme.

9. Well, there's always this episode...
snip

Divided We Fall

in the Wacky Protestor’s return, he hijacks the popular children’s TV show, "Mr. Funky's Wild Time", and uses it to control the hearts and minds of every child watching. With this new technology the Wacky Protestor also pits the Bibleman Adventure Team against one another. Distracted by petty disagreements, the Bibleteam is in trouble until the Word of God points them in the right direction just in time to thrwart the Wacky Protestor’s plan.

end snip

Taking over with mind control? Pure Evil! Now, children, go read your Bibles!

11. Spreading messages of tolerance and acceptance is mind control!
"Don't listen to the liberals! They'll make you think for yourself with their evil mind control!"

That is how religion works- if what someone is saying seems to make sense, then they are using mind control... so it's better to simply not listen to someone if their ideas aren't 'Christian'.
