How common is it for VPs to be selected from primary season candidates?
Edited on Wed Sep-24-03 08:58 AM by StrongBad
The 2004 election will be the first in which I actually paid attention to primary season. In the past, it seems that the party nominee's VP selection (whether it be repub or dem) has always been selected outside the realm of fellow candidates in the same election year.

I'm wondering whether or not it is viable to have a VP that was a primary candidate and when such a practice has been done in the past. Thanks for any info and personal opinions you can share.

1. Don't Forget Poppy...
In 1980 George Herbert Walker Bush was selected Ronnie Raygun's VP nominee (after Gerald Ford turned it down)...Bush ran against Raygun in the primaries and coined the term "Voodoo Economics"

Also in 1960, LBJ ran against JFK in those primaries (as did Hubert Humphrey).

2. That ticket showed how much regional "strategery" can matter
Having the 2 western and southern superstates(CA and TX) as your base of safeness proved to be a homerun for the GOP. Carter could have won the election had they not been so situated to sweep those entire regions.

3. Considering how much animosity is generated in the primaries,
it's amazing it ever happens at all.

That being said, I think that this election cycle, it's almost a certainty. Too many strong, strong candidates running this time not to have #1 & #2 out of these 10.

5. Only LBJ and Bush(41) were
Presidential candidates in the year they were selected for VP.

Gore ran in 1988, but not in '92 when Clinton selected him.

Nixon did not run for president prior to his selection by Ike in 1952.

If history is any guide, the odds are that none of the current crop of 10 will be the VP pick.
