Say what you will about Bush, but isn't he engendering a revival in the arts? Isn't he making history?
President Tartuffe is like a grain of sand under the oyster's shell, like an ambergris-producing disease in the bowels of a whale. If he doesn't kill us, I think we are going to be stronger.
If there is a silver lining to Bush, I think it is the lessons he is teaching us about foolishness, false pride, false piety, everything false. We are getting a massive dose of stupidity and deadly sin from Bush, and our social immune system is reacting accordingly. Plays will be written about Bush in the years ahead. I look forward to them.
My ex-wife and daughter went to a Green Day concert. The lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong introduced the band. When he got to himself, he said "and I'm George Bush." The crowd went wild with boos.
The courage of the Dixie Chicks, the wild brilliance of Janeane Garofalo, the lovable, ass-kicking Al Franken... none of that would have happened without Bush.
Please don't get me wrong. It is a true shame to us all that we have to go through this insane spasm of history. But Bush has burned the world so badly that we may all be wiser, more compassionate, and more interesting for this generation and generations to come. He is history's counter-example of good leadership for our time, the Arts counter-example of truth and beauty. He helps all of our compasses by being a reliable South.
