Liberal leaning Newspapers? What are some good ones?
The local rag, San Diego Union Tribune, is a Copley RW fishwrap. I gave up reading it and newspapers in general some time ago. I get my news on the internet.

Whats left in CA for Lib News?

LA Times?
SF Chronicle?
SF Examiner?
San Jose Mercury News?
Orange County Register?

Not in CA:
NT Times?
Chicago Tribune?
Boston Globe?
Detroit Free Press?

I want to subscribe to a paper but dont want to waste my time and money on a RW/conservative rag.

Any suggestions?

1. LAT and SJ Merc News seem to be among the better ones,

from the stories I've seen them cover, and Op Ed.

Editorial Page of the Atlanta Journal Constitution slants liberal, even though the rest of the paper doesn't seem too great from what I've seen. (ajc.com)

Op-Ed page of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram has the great Molly Ivins, though I generally read her stuff when it's linked through here and don't actually follow the paper though.

NYT is mainly worth reading for Krugman (OpEd) and Frank Rich. Rest of paper is hit or miss these days.

I still check out the Washington Post OpEd, but it kinda sux and the rest of the paper sux compared to its glory days. Sad to think that I grew up with that paper and how great it used to be.

5. I grew up reading the Boston Globe. Didnt the NY Times buy it?
And the NY Times is not a left-leaning paper anymore?
What about the Washington Post?

8. I thought the Wash Post bought the Boston Blob.

Isn't that why Dionne's column sometimes appears there?

Another good, liberal paper is Newsday. They've got a couple of good liberal columnists, Marie Coco being among them and Pinkerton - whom I used to hate - is a conservative columnist worth reading. Sometimes he really trashes Bush.

Oh, and Newsday favors the Mets over the Yankees...

4. Chi Trib isn't left leaning - but is generally okay
Free Press moved right when it merged with the Detroit News more than a decade ago. Wouldn't call it a RW rag - but its not progressive.

I would stick with the LA Times, the MercNews, and maybe the NYT.

Says she stuck with the Indy Star.

The Toronto Star is excellent. Their web site is easy to navigate. Just click on "Today's Paper" or "columnists." Tim Harper is their Washington, DC guy. Antonio Z., the media correspondent has interesting things to say about US media.

The Guardian also is excellent. But you probably know that.

The Independent is terrific, but with the huge increase in hits on their site after September Eleventh, they've gotten greedy and require payment for some articles.

I also check the Daily Telegraph a couple of times a week. Not bad.

Check out The Scotsman as well.

For terrific commentary on the Middle East, check out Trudy Rubin in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Yes, I know this is a domestic paper.

13. maybe you should subscribe to The Nation?
It is a weekly left-leaning "news magazine." Since I am a poor school teacher, I have to ration my money very carefully....right now, The Nation is my only subscription. In the past, I also subscribed to The Progressive magazine.

Since I'm a Wisconsinite, I look to the Capitol Times for local news. I just read on-line. I periodically check out the New York Times and the Washington Post on-line as well. I wouldn't really consider either incredibly (or even remotely) "progressive" however. The NY Times is a little better (in my opinion). As for the Chicago Tribune - definitely not progressive.

16. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The PG is a sister to the Toledo Blade and they keep Pittsburgh safe from the forces of Scaife's evil Tribune Review.

Funny story: I went to the grocery store last week and there's usually someone there hawking newspaper subscriptions. Normally it's the PG, but they had someone from the Trib there that day. Salesman was an older guy, kinda had a repub vibe to him, I could see him being a Trib reader.

He did his short little pitch and at first I didn't catch what paper it was (Had my headphones on and I was trying to untangle two shopping carts). I saw the Trib sign and immeditately informed him I'd never pay for the Tribune Review.

He kind of looked half-shocked, half-amused that this young whippersnapper was so opinonated, and asked me why not. I informed him I'd never buy anything owned by Scaife after what he did to Clinton. The look on his face was priceless and he could only offer a weak "well at least you have an informed opinon" as he gave me a look that said he was hoping I'd leave so I wouldn't cost him any sales.

17. the St. Pete Times is a pretty good paper
they seem to cover a lot of the stories that we talk about here that other papers neglect. Today they had three or four articles about the DSM, one of them on the front page.

18. The Baltimore Sun .... but .......
They seem to have not gotten the DSMinutes reports ........ the first thing for which they've incurred my wrath .... as evidenced by Sparkly, just last week, cancelling our subscription. We cancelled the WaPo years ago.
