So, I'm out for a walk with Mr. Graywarrior & get called KKK
by a group of kids at the park. We live in a multi-cultural neighborhood in Florida. I was wearing a tie dye hippie tee shirt, which was ridiculed and compared to the candy Skittles (I admit it's a goofy shirt and I'm a moron to wear it, but it cost 50 cents at Goodwill, so there you have it).

But the KKK reference bothered me, although it didn't anger me. On the way back, they apologized and we accepted, but I really think they meant it. We didn't want to bring it up again, so we just let it go, but Mr. Graywarrior said that if they mentioned it again, he was going to tell them their granparents would probably whoop them for throwing out such a serious reference in jest and to not assume that all people like us approve of KKK groups.

2. I'm trying to equate the reference...
Usually KKK and tie dye are 180 polar opposites. Where did it come from?

9. lack of understanding/referant points for either the KKK or the 'tie-dye'
if I don't have a referant point - I relate anything to anything.

3. They probably don't even know...
what the KKK is or what they stand for. Just something they heard their parents say and thought it would be cool to throw it around.

6. Evidently they don't know that most hippies are too stoned
to run around with the KKK.

I forgot to mention the shirt has a pointed hood.
Kidding.

8. Maybe they were high on shrooms
and instead of a colorful tie-dye shirt it was all white?

And they just totally freaked out?

Huh? Did you consider THAT?

13. Tell them to go back to bigot school.
If you're going to insult someone, at have the decency to be relevant.

15. I would have been tempted to put on a very puzzled face
and ask them just what their line of reasoning was. And then launch into a diatribe about what a poor education they seem to be receiving.

Just a little comic relief. I really wouldn't worry about it. They sound like idiots!

17. I think I would have given the kids a mouthful
On the other hand at least they apologized so maybe the stupidity of their comments bothered them!

Additionally WTF would they think that tie dye was a KKK thing?
BIZARRE!

18. I guess it depends on what crowd the guy on the pogo stick hangs with
BTW, Florida is a very bigotted state.

Bigotry breeds bigotry.

20. Who is the guy on the pogo stick?
I must be missing something here...but tie dye traditionally does not evoke thoughts of the KKK or Buford Pusser types.

19. Kudos to you
I'm glad you had the respect not to make a big deal about it.

It shows you are not a loser right winger and will help create a better society in the future.

(Assuming of course that everything in the original post actually happened as written.)

21. That is just too bizarre for me to figure out
I mean, if you're going to insult someone, at least have a frame of reference. Tie dye and KKK just don't go together. Can't you just see it? A large group of long-haired, tie dye wearing, dope smoking hippies hanging out burning crosses?

Ah, the ignorance of the young.... :silly:
