It eliminates ALL credibility from this supposed "contest." No reasonable person can honestly claim that he's the number one greatest American -- if there is such a thing. Regardless of how you feel about him, to say that he's ahead of Lincoln, Washington, MLK, etc, is laughable.

Had Reagan been in the top 10 or 15, the freeps would at least have had an argument -- one that I would have vehemently disagreed with. But to have him finish first. WHAT-EVER!!! (Please insert a pause in the middle)

On Edit: I should probably point out that I'm the kind of person who enjoys it when a totally ridiculous player is chosen in the fan voting for a sports (usually baseball) all-star game. All I want to see this year is Barry Bonds get elected to the all-star team since he hasn't played a single game all year. It simply exposes how silly it is.

1. What you have to reaize is that the sanity votes for the real greatests
were all split. The wackos who think Reagan should have Saddam like statues all of the US probably all voted for him. Probably a massive majority of people don't think he is, thye just split the vote.

4. We all know
that Gorby didn't have ANYTHING to do with the fall of the Soviet Union.

It was all Reagan. In between naps.

3. Don't forget that he played second fiddle to a monkey
in Bedtime for Bonzo.

I guess maybe that could qualify him??:sarcasm:

6. The only thing Reagan should have won was...
...the indictment he deserved (but didn't get) for Iran-Contra. That and a mandatory dunce cap atop any and all of his statuary. Domestically he was hardly better than Herbert Hoover -- and many times more vicious. I remember the Reagan Recession all too well: in much of the Pacific Northwest it was a genuine depression, undoubtedly the worst economic conditions of my lifetime so far. And all the while -- with millions suffering -- Ronnie grinning his malicious grin, Nancy making idiot-eyes at him, and his administration committing atrocities like arbitrarily flinging hundreds of thousands of severely disabled people into the street by doom-sizing SSI.

Moreover though I was always a harsh critic of the Soviet mode of governance, it was undeniably clear the presence of USSR in the international economic equation kept the US relatively honest, especially in terms of restraining the innate predatory malevolence of capitalism. Now that its gone -- and don't blame Gorbachev (one man could not possibly undo the legacy of decades) -- we're seeing capitalism manifest toxic excesses never before imagined. THIS is Reagan's real legacy, not the coincidental collapse of the USSR, which would have occurred no matter who was in the White House.

10. Shucks I missed the whole fairy tale
I wonder if they took Ronnie's October surprise into consideration or the depression down on the farm. The 80's were the years of a big Federal Land Grab. Many farmers were borrowed way more money than they wanted only to be stripped of everything. That is his legacy and tearing up Central and South America to boot while the CIA dealt drugs to pay for their funny business.

What a stupid fffing show to begin with. Matt Lauer :puke:
:argh:

11. I agree totally with your statement
For Reagan to be chosen before King, Washington, Franklin, Lincoln just proves that there was absolutely nothing legit about this so-called contest. It's ridiculous and really puke making.

I also agree with your assessment of the "all-star voting" and it would be funny and eye-opening if Bonds did win.
