Did MoveOn.org ever suggest their be NO military response to 9/11?
Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 08:59 AM by Postman
Brit Hume said that Move.On.org had 700,000 people sign a petition that called for NO military response for 9/11.

Maybe he's confusing the unjust, immoral and illegal war in Iraq with a "no military response to 9/11" comment.

You can't shame people who have no shame.

The most anti-American group of human flesh on the planet sits at Fox News.

1. Even if they did....
the proper response to 9/11 would be to attack Saudi Arabia, since 15 of the 19 hijackers AND OBL hail from that country. Plus, we've all but ignored Afghanistan since March of 2003 while a dialysis-addled OBL remains at large.

4. After listening to Hume, you 'd think the country was over-run with ...
"liberals"...

Most of the country is "moderate", I would say.

So why be soo concerned about such an insignificant percentage of the American people?

It's not as if the minority of "liberals" in the country are formulating policy right now.

I know, I know. It's all propaganda.

13. Brit Hume is a stupid *&^$*$&$!@#@
That guy is so drunk on kool-aid it is pathetic. So what if MoveOn did not want a military response? I can't remember what their stance was with Afghanistan, but really it doesn't matter since this is coming from Hume.

2. Some Quotes
http://www.americasnewspaper.com/top.shtml

Republicans appeared to be ready for the complaints, with the
Republican National Committee sending out a list of statements that backed up Mr. Rove’s charge, including one from MoveOn.org calling for “moderation and restraint” after the terrorist attacks.
MoveOn.org on June 23 said it did, in fact, support going to war in Afghanistan.

http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/journalgazette/11982241.htm

"It's somewhat puzzling why all these Democrats ... who responded forcefully after 9/11, who voted to support President Bush's pursuit of the war on terror, are now rallying to the defense of MoveOn.org, this liberal organization who put out a petition in the days after 9/11 and said that we ought not use military force in responding to 9/11," Bartlett said on NBC's "Today" show. "That is who Karl Rove cited in that speech ... There is no need to apologize."

But Eli Pariser, executive director of the MoveOn political action committee, said the online group didn't oppose U.S. military action in Afghanistan in response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

"Karl Rove is trying to change the subject on the president's failed Iraq policy," Pariser said in a statement. "Recent polls show growing majorities want an exit strategy. Lying about MoveOn won't solve Rove's problem."

5. Contradiction From Move On's Web Site ????
Or maybe Eli meant -- not opposed to action but wanted 'restraint'
and 'multi-lateral' approach

Taken from MoveOn's website:

The MoveOn Peace campaign was founded independently by Eli Pariser, a Maine native and recent graduate of Simon's Rock College of Bard. In the days following September 11th, 2001, he launched an online petition calling for a restrained and multi-lateral response to the attacks, which was quickly signed by more than half a million people. Eli joined forces with MoveOn soon afterward, and is now MoveOnPAC's Executive Director (see www.moveonpac.org).

6. Not that I recall
I've been active in MoveOn since its beginning during the Clinton impeachment, and I don't remember any communications from them involving Afghanistan.

You know, it's funny how the Republicans and their cohorts in the media try to paint MoveOn as some whacky, leftist, wild-eyed group. I've met with people in their living rooms and participated in things as shockingly radical as a bake sale and a virtual garage sale. Most MoveOn members that I've met are middle class people with children and jobs, suburban types, hardly revolutionary Marxists. For many of them, it's the first time they've been politically involved. We're just people who care about our country and we're involved to push back against the true radical extremists, the Republicans in Congress and the tyrant in the White House.

They're making a Big Scary Monster out of MoveOn, and it's laughable. What they're really scared of is a grass-roots movement that is trying to return some degree of political power from the lobbyists to the people. THAT is what they hate.

7. 9/11 was a horrible crime, not carried out by another country.
Most of the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia, but their government was not behind the attack.

Afghanistan offered to surrender Bin Laden if we could prove he was responsible. The US didn't bother & invaded--& has no plan to leave.

8. On September 13 there was a petition
asking to not apply violence without the necessary judicial procedure to back it up. I think it was through peaceout, but moveon did participate in it. Basically it requested that we don't go off half-cocked angry and attack a country without going through the legal and moral justification of war....

10. sounds like a rational response.
Nothing wrong with making sure you respond according to where the facts lead you.

Unlike Iraq.

11. Truth...........

Calling for a restrained and multi-lateral response to the attacks on 9-11 is not saying we should give therapy to the terrorists who attacked us. Which is what Karl Rove said, and you miss the big issue.

The moveon.org statement is a cover up from people defending Rove, it's the excuse they are now using to back out of what Rove meant.

When he said liberals wanted to give the terrorists therapy after 9-11 he was talking about all liberals, and Democrats. Now they are saying oh we just meant moveon.org, that is bullshit.

If liberals wanted to give terrorists therapy after 9-11 how did Bush have 90% approval ratings ?

I supported going after the terrorists who attacked us 100%, and if it was Bin laden I supported capturing him and chopping his head off. I am a liberal, a big liberal, and I wanted Bin Laden killed, so real liberals did not want therapy for terrorists.

The problem is Rove, he is trying to make the country think liberals do not want to punish terrorists, and that we are soft on terrorists. Nothing could be further from the truth. If they are terrorists they should be caught or killed and if caught locked up forever with no chance of parole.

On top of that the terrorists all came from Saudi Arabia and we attacked afghanistan. We bombed the whole country, I believe moveon.org was just calling for restrained action by saying do not kill everyone, just the taliban. Rove misrepresented what they were calling for, duh.

The problem is Saudi Arabia, yet we did nothing to them. And they say that 60% of the suicide bombers in Iraq are Saudis, yet we do nothing to Saudi Arabia.
