Australian state set to ban glue traps for mice
Mice escape cruel ending

Tanya Giles
27jun05

PEOPLE who use glue traps to kill mice and rats will be hit with fines of up to $1000 under a crackdown on animal cruelty.

The State Government is set to be the first state to outlaw the traps because of the injury, suffering and distress they cause rodents and other small animals.

Glue traps are available from supermarkets and hardware stores, and catch small animals when their feet become stuck as they walk or run across the sticky boards.

Professional trappers kill more than 250,000 rodents in Australia each year using glue traps.

I hate those glue traps. I didn't even know they existed until last summer when we had a mouse infestation and discovered them among the other traps. Caught and released over 20 mice using humane traps.

Some of them survived the winter because I saw a few eating out of the rabbit feeder outside in minus zero weather. But they haven't moved back in.

1. Geee.. when they fine $1000 for failure to spay/neuter OR
taking a no longer wanted cat or dog to the local animal shelter, I will be impressed.

But outlawing "glue traps" for mice when there are sentient beings (cows, pigs, etc) being factory farmed/slaughtered and thousands of domesticated dogs/cats being left at shelters...outlawing "glue traps" doesn't impress me.

4. Who decides what is a "sentient being" ?
Those traps are incredibly cruel for any living thing that can feel pain.

3. I think those things are sick.
It's a horrible way to go and I'm glad someone is outlawing them. In addition, other animals can get stuck on them.

5. Where I Work . . .
they use them all the time. I work across the street from ground zero and the mouse population in our building obviously has increased after 9/11.

I go to as many floors in my building as I can and toss them in the trash! They are cruel.

7. I used them once-they worked to catch the mice
I still had to kill the mice. The last time I had mice (in my old house), my cat caught them. I also had to finish the job, because Miranda was a kitten and couldn't make the kill. I haven't had any since she's been full grown, especially since I moved out of the city and into a house that wasn't as old.

I have no qualms about killing mice or rats. They are disease-carrying vermin and if they want to live, they better stay outside. I never did the release thing-they'll just come back. The traps catch them, and then you can put the trap with the mouse in a plastic bag, and hit the mouse with a broomstick, and put it out of it's misery. It's more mercy than Miranda will show.

9. Would they ban a glue trap for presidents?
It would be a real blessing if somebody caught the G8 leaders with
a cleverly placed glue trap. :-)

Perhaps they should place it under the table in the main conference
room, and their feet will all get stuck. Then they'll be stuck
together forever, a putin/bush/chiraq/blair/shroeder/martin/hu/berlusconi
stinking mess.

Just how do you dispose of a glue trap with a bunch of assholes in it?

(sorry about that martin/shroeder - its the company you keep)

Bush caught in a glue trap shaped like Iraq.

12. I think glue traps are horrible.
don't know how people can use those things.

I have a Hav-a-Heart mouse trap that I use. Very effective. A little peanut butter on the bait tray, and the next morning you have a mouse - unharmed. Release the mouse outside, far from the house.

I couldn't imagine finding a poor creature stuck to one of these things. Ack!

14. I bought a device from Home Shopping or QVC (can't remember which)
that repels rodents. I had a big mouse and rat problem. Tried poison, but that didn't work. They ate it like candy. This device plugs in the wall and it sends out some type of signal that drives the little critters out of the house. I have two of them and have not seen any signs or rats or mice in 6 months.

15. One of those ultrasonic devices, right?
Yeah, it messes with their ability to communicate. Makes them nuts and sends them out. I don't think you can use one if you have small pets (rabbits, hamsters, etc). Good alternative, though.
