Prepare yourselves, gas could hit $3.00 a Gallon.

http://money.cnn.com/2005/06/27/news/economy/gas_prices/index.htm?cnn=yes

I posted this only because it really is a lose-lose situation at this point in time. If the Oil Peak theory is true, and we dont have anymore reserves and we have used up half the worlds supply of oil, only to have demand increase with price; then yes we are in trouble. But the other side of the card is just as bad. Rising population means Oil Companies wont be able to meet the demand, or get enough of it, quickly enough to meet that demand.

Screwed either way; I hate Oil so so much, but we can't live without it.

1. Welcome to DU!
Gas (87 octane) is not yet $2.00 a gallon in New Orleans... though, I expect it to rise, rise, rise...

4. Yep, I filled up a couple of days ago
The tank will last almost two weeks if I'm careful.

I do wish we had decent public transporation around here. I'd use it.

6. We have a shitty public transportation system here too
and we do not have but a lincoln towncar that guzzles gas (old car and all we could and can afford). My husband fills it up once a month. We do have a Buick but the starter is fried, of course, gets better gas mileage and we haven't filled up since late May (before the starter went out).

hey, at least if worse comes to worse, I can siphon gas out of the Buick into the towncar. ROFLMAO...

5. Its been going up and down like a fucked up roller coaster.
In April, as the article says; it was pretty damn high.

Its only going to get higher though. I could see unrest in the Middle East causing it to climb close to 100 a barrel or more. Certainly sucks.

Wonder if Bush will just start another war.

I have a Tacoma Prerunner that only gets 19mpg, I am selling it for a car that gets closer to 30mpg.

8. My dream is to own a hybrid
someday. I need to finish college first. For now we have one dead car and one shitty gas guzzling lincoln towncar (both used and what we could afford, let's put it this way. they are both 15 years old. LOL.).

20. So far the '93 regal is doing pretty good
We've gone to the same dealership to get cars from for quite a while now and fairly good friends with the owner. Whenever we see him he's asking us to buy a second car. A year or two ago we might have thought about it, but there's no way we can afford a second car right now, if ever. They don't have any hybrids, but we did tell him should he get one that works for us to call.

Otherwise, we stick with what we've got.

30. The Freeway Blogger said it best
Solders are dying in the Hummer in Iraq so you can play solider in yours.

Yeah, at least if I lived in back home in N'wawlins, I could use the damned RTA. I've even lived careless in N'wawlins (in Treme on Esplanade and on Carrolton near Oak). And in DC, the car sat so long the car dealer all but accused us of turning back the odometer.

But here in Frozen Land (Fargo, ND) , I can almost justify a four-wheel drive vehicle.

32. So, where's all that oil money going?
With skyrocketing profits, oil companies are having to decide how to deal with all that cash!
http://money.cnn.com/2005/05/25/markets/oil_profits/index.htm
Where's all that oil money going?
Energy companies are seeing record revenue, but don't look for too much reinvestment.

Watch out for acquisitions

Other analysts say the companies could deal with the cash build by making acquisitions.

"It's the only way, there's nothing else" said Gheit, the Oppenheimer analyst.

He said most firms have already paid down their debt, have earmarked lots of money for stock buybacks and are wary of increasing dividends too much in such a cyclical industry.
-snip-

Business as usual
For their part, oil companies aren't rushing into anything.

Roddy Kennedy, a BP spokesman, said the company has no plans to spend more on drilling or exploration and will continue to return the extra cash to shareholders in the form of dividend increases and stock buybacks.

35. I've said this before, and I'll say it again...
THERE IS NO SHORTAGE THAT IS DRIVING UP THE PRICE OF GAS. If there were shortages, you would see: 1. Gas stations closed with signs at the pump saying "No Gas". 2. Long lines at the few stations that are open. 3. Open stations limiting your purchase to XX number of gallons per car. Do you now understand? There is no shortage. Also, why should you believe me? Because I'm a professional Geologist who has worked all aspects of the oil and gas exploration and production since 1981. I currently work for an international testing laboratory that serves the oil and gas companies. There is no shortage of oil. There are, however, RECORD PROFITS being made by all concerned, including the company I work for. It's called price gouging.

Also, here in Houston the price is about $2.10 or more for regular. I cope by riding one of these everywhere:

Honda Elite motor scooter, 80 mpg, and a ton of fun to ride!

40. I believe you
I know someone who works in a refinery and he tells me there is no shortage.

Also, imo, if a real shortage existed, speed limits would be lowered and there would be new mileage requirements made for auto makers.

Your scooter is cool!

41. $2.33 for 87 octane
Here near boston, MA. I am still trying to solve my Subaru's mileage problems...I've gotten it up to 23 mpg on the highway but it's rated for 30 (and 24 city!). Grr. I only do 25 miles/day so the gas prices aren't effecting me much, and once I get a 50% increase mileage I'll spend a few less dollars per week.
