I realize the copy-cat thread syndrome takes over at times and causes repeated threads on one thing or another. Today, it's religion. I don't have any answers on how these issues we atheists and you christians have can be resolved, but I do know we shouldn't be wasting time fighting about it. The fundamentalists are trying to make this country into a theocracy, something all liberals in favor of separation of church and state should be trying to stop. Here are my suggestions:
Christians - Stop with the persecution complex. Your faith is not under attack, even if some mean old atheist takes a swipe at you once in a while. Realize most broad brush statements aren't directed towards you, but at the fundies. Focus your anger on the fundies who claim to be christian yet do not follow the words of JC. Spread the liberal message packaged in a religious context. Jim Wallis knows all about this.
Atheists - Sometimes it is tempting to say all christians of a particular sect follow an anti-this or that doctrine, but that isn't true. Each person believes differently, and liberal christians get pissed when they are viewed as a monolithic entity lock step with their church's offical positions. Individual parishes often are more liberal than the governing authorities. Yes, some people have thin skins and believe you are trying to insult them when you are not, so explain yourself whenever possible.
If we both have common values, then their is no reason we can't respect one another and work toward our shared goals.
