WASHINGTON - National radio talk show hosts Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and G. Gordon Liddy are loudly calling for Americans to make their voices heard in defense of free speech on the radio, currently under threat in Congress. A major vote is scheduled for Tuesday, September 16, in which the Senate is expected to vote on a rare "resolution of disapproval," S.J. Res. 17, to rollback recent media ownership deregulation by the FCC.

While S.J. Res. 17 does not itself reinstate the "Fairness Doctrine", leading congressmen like liberal Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) have already revealed their larger agenda as that of reinstating the Fairness Doctrine, repealed in 1987. Reintroduction of the Fairness Doctrine would have the effect of clearing the airwaves of commentators such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Gordon Liddy.

In recognition of this, more than 34,000 Americans on Friday and through the weekend sent e-mails of protest to their senators and representatives through ATR's www.stopmediaregulation.org, and reports had senators' offices flooded with calls of protest. Their attention was drawn to this legislative threat by America's leading talk show hosts, notably Limbaugh, Hannity and Liddy.

"A June 5th press release from Representative Hinchey's office revealed the liberals' true agenda to ultimately reinstate the Fairness Doctrine," said Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform. "Debate on the House floor as reported in the July 22, 2003 Congressional Record makes clear the Democratic strategy to hold off on their larger agenda until they had achieved a critical breakthrough with the media ownership rollback votes scheduled for September. Prominent liberals such as Bill Clinton, Ralph Nader, Jesse Jackson and People for the American Way are cheerleading the September rollback effort." Another important vote will take place soon on an appropriations bill with similar effect.

"We're pleased at the outcry people who truly value free speech are making about this outrageous liberal power grab," continued Norquist. "ATR is proud of the role it's playing in helping great Americans like Limbaugh, Hannity and Liddy in rousing the American people to stand up for their rights."

The liberal assault has largely been promoted with misleading claims, such as those of Rock the Vote, which attempts to falsely lead readers to believe that media deregulation endangers their music preferences.

free speech? yeah , if you think that means allowing one company (clearchannel) to buy up all of the stations in the country and then air exclusively fringe talk host that demonize anyone who disagrees with Lowry Mays' friends in the white house.
